  • Chinese sub stalks U.S. carrier

not really that big of news, but it's been a slow news day (actually a slow news month). The russians did this all the time.

They also stalked them during war games, but the U.S. said they weren't running anti sub operations. That's either bull****, or they aren't doing a very good wargame. They should always be on the lookout for subs. I always felt this way when I was in. I always felt like our ships were defenseless out there. And we were. No one ever expects anyone to attack us. Ship security and defense systems were very lax.

It was a diesal-electric which can be very quiet (when using electric obviously). And from the comments on the first link, they said 5 miles is not torpedo range. I was not a weapons guy when I was in the navy, so I have no idea what the torpedo ranges were. But it was within missile range. Firing missiles would be a suicide attack, but they might be able to get some through.

Navy officials confirmed yesterday that an aircraft carrier battle group failed to detect a Chinese submarine that surfaced within weapons range of the USS Kitty Hawk. Anti-submarine defenses for the carrier battle group will be reviewed as a result, they said.

Would the US navy really care? Aren't the Chinese just providing them with more signatures of their subs?
      What?

If you know you're being stalked, the sub isn't quiet enough.

(IIRC, torpedo range is ~3000 meters.)

I suspect it would depend on the torpedo.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

They should have sunk it and then blamed the sub for getting in the way of the weapons. Then we could have demanded an apology.

Given that everyone sees the Chinese subs coming, I wouldn't worry to much about it. However, I wouldn't let them know that we could see them.

                Jep.
Our new Type 212 sub would have done a better job in remaining undetected
