I'd rather believed that democracy saved the world than capitalism. I believe rampant capitalism is responsible for slavery, the depression, the birth and spread of communism among other things. The abiltiy of the people to vote in a new government is what eventually led to the abolishment of slavery. Same thing for the depression. The more democratic a government is the more they have to answer to the people. That's why we in america had to institute some socialist concepts in our society like free lunch for the poor in school.

Actually, you got those because there were Communist countries to serve as a "bad" example to the poor and working folks that they didn't need the rich. So the rich realized they needed to make things better for regular folks. Now that socialism has been driven to bankruptcy, things like free school lunches are under attack around the world.

An influential Democratic lawmaker on Sunday called for reinstatement of the draft as a way to boost U.S. troop levels and draw a broader section of the population into the military or public service.

U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, the incoming chairman of the House of Representatives' tax-writing committee, said he would introduce legislation to reinstate the draft as soon as the new, Democratic-controlled Congress convenes in January.

Asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" if he was still serious about the proposal for a universal draft he raised a couple of years ago, he said, "You bet your life. Underscore serious."

Ummm... in actuality what you describe as outcomes of democracy moreso are the outcomes of war.

The existance of slavery for years on end was a failing of democracy and only after civil war and force of arms was slavery abolished. Of course I suppose you could say it was brought to loggerheads by the voting of Lincoln as President, but realize Lincoln was not running with the intention of slavery elimination. That became a goal only as a means to prevent foreign support once civil war was well established.

The elimination of effects of the great depression was not because of the new deal policy makers which at best were some salve to ease the fears of the general populace, no it was the effect of US mobilization and war profiteering circa 1936 onward. NO around 1936 all the policy initiatives were actually looking to fail and only with the advent of WW2 was the great depression lessened and recovery enabled for the US.

The move to the left around that period of time was as much a forestallment of communism to prevent another great class struggle and civil war as it was a means to help the struggling. Not so much a noble endeavor of Democracy per se but moreso political machinations of a shrewd FDR who prior to office was farther to the right on a number of economic issues than Hoover.
