Islamism was the alternative to Arafat's socialist-nationalist politics. Islamism is the result of the failure of people like Arafat to succeed in the independence struggle with the Israelis. Israel succeeded in marginalizing him, to everyone's detriment.
          :sigh:

Arafat's marginalization was an internal process of a battle between several new rising palestinian elites: Hamas and Fatah young hawks.

The new leadership generation that grew in the 70s and 80s in Palestinian refugee camps eventually fought against Arafat.

Instead of bringing them up together with him, and satisfying them, Arafat cynically abused them, and bid them to fight each other, while keeping absolute political power for himself.

Arafat stole on people's money and instead of improving lives, he improved his bank accounts and those surrounding him.

The palestinian people, already fed-up by being governed by Israel - got fed up of Arafat's Fateh. Even the young leaders within Arafat's Fateh, got tired of Arafat's Fateh.

While Arafat was a symbol no one could argue with - he was hated by everyone around him for his "conquer and divide" politics.

Arafat has also intentionally let islamist-nationalist rage to fester thinking he could always "ride the wave" and control the violence.

Hamas were smarter in the long run, investing money in all the fields that Arafat stole from - education, social services etc.

Arafat lost his popularity long ago, and then finally lost control.

Israel aided that process unintentionally, by limiting the power of his police forces. However, seeing that in 2000-2003 both Arafat's police and Hamas took upon themselves ferocious terrorist attacks - there was little choice.

All that you write is true, but a few considerations need to be kept in mind: #1, and most important, Israel funded and nurtured Hamas as an alternative to Fatah and the PLO.

#2, corruption is generally tolerated by people if the leaders can still bring home the bacon (in this case turkey bacon because pork is unclean ). If Israel hadn't reduced Arafat to irrelevancy by imprisoning him in the PLA headquarters and refusing to negotiate with him in good faith, he wouldn't have lost the support of the Palestinian people regardless of what else he did.

#3, despite all else, he was the focus of the national aspirations of the Palestinian people. If there ever is a Palestine, he will be considered the father of their country.

So basically what you're saying is that at the very least he'll get his mug on the palestinian $100 bill

Nope, just someone who got murdered by thugs. This doesn't invalidate the right of the Palestinian people to be free from Israeli oppression, just as American repression of loyalists didn't invalidate our right to be free from Great Britain.
