French troops 'came close to shooting down Israeli jets'
SHEEP! MtG, how many times do I have to tell you...
...I only have eyes for ewe...
I figured you're so hung up on the ME, and such an arab lover you had forsaken the sheep of your forebears and had gone native - a modern day Moby of Arabia, so to speak.

Sarcasm generally requires irony, satire and/or wit. The comment I quoted in which you wished the French had fired on the Israelis, contains none of those things. It is, at best, a poor example of sarcasm. It was a simple discharge of excrement.
This is what happens when you talk out of your ass.

It can only be a sarcastic remark - I mean think of what would happen if France actually did shoot down an Israeli plane!!?
Are you lot really that dense!!?
No, don't answer that - the reason I come here after all is so that I can enjoy feeling superior over people for fun, carry on please!
Now you see how well sarcasm supports you.
Or
It doesn't at all make you look like an @ss.

In any case, I think it's time the peacekeeping force shows some teeth against both violating parties.
The only legtimate forces in SOuthern Lebanon are the Lebanese army and the FINUL. Everybody else should stay out, or be punished.
This is the very reason why France wanted clearer rules of engagement before going to Lebanon. To have the ability to actually use force against all violators.
This is also the source of misunderstanding between the US and France about the "clearer mandate": the US wanted a mandate that turns the FINUL into a force that destroys Hezbollah. The French wanted a FINUL that restores Lebanese sovereignity against both its enemies.

I guess they were just testing how they respond.. that's all.
However, without looking at the flag of what ever, you respond to violations with blinders on IMO.
That is, if you are supposed to shoot, you shoot. In this case it didn't come down to that so that'¨s cool but the same kind of treatment for everyone. Including hezbollah or what ever.
If they come in blazing, open fire. They aren't suppsoed to take sides.
In da butt.

As for the raids, the French are in the right here. I too share some concern regarding their even-handedness wrt to Hezbollah, but that doesn't justify Israel's actions here.
Given the nature of what they were doing... was this done to just piss off the French? Was there some military purpose to this?

Since when are spy planes a danger to any forces?
Particularly the french?
If the French suspect we are going to fire at them, they should seriously re-thinking their relationship with Israel. This is a poor pre-text.
What the french want is a show of power.
I mean - its really really difficult tracking all those invisible Iran - Hezbullah weapon transfers and it really isn't politically correct for france to track Syrian weapon transfers (Syrian being such good friends to Chirac).
"So we need an easy way to make it appear we are enforcing a truce... Hey! Lets bugger the Israelis!"
"Their planes are big and easy to track. That's a clear and visible achievement for our mandate. Not like those tons of hard to find weapons".
"And besides - its easy to blame the Israelis of agressive intentions. But if we blame Hezbullah - these guys might actually do it".
Did you guys know by the way that Hezbullah is again in charge of the southern quarter of Beirut, and has scared off the army and police? Yep - they have their own traffic controllers and policemen brigades and what not.

If I see the french taking a stand against Hezbullah or trying to disarm it, I'll fully justify them shooting at Israeli planes.
The French. This was about UN. If you start testing the UN troops, you are in violation and deserve to get your ass shot.
Just like anyone else.
