    Why would they?

Although they should ban smoking in front of children under the age of 18.

          Nevermind, I re-read carefully.

I thought she worked in a bar.

Actually, even though I'm a smoker I prefer non-smoking reastaurants.

It's only logical if you're going to treat smoking as a public health issue. Far more people (especially children) get prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke in the home than they do in restaurants and bars.

Really, if smoking is a public health issue, they should just make it illegal like other drugs...

That's not feasible. It'll just create a non-taxable black market.

Word. It should be illegal to smoke indoors near children, period. Don't know how you'd enforce that, though.

Oh, so you want the money from the smokers but you want to segregate them from the rest of society.

I'd prefer they quit. But I recognize that outright banning it creates a black market, so they don't quit anyway and we lose out on tax money that is levied for the exact reasons that they have more health problems --> cost more.

So banning smoking doesn't make them quit, and removes revenue from the public health care system, while they still keep getting sick.

                  Therefore, it doesn't make sense.

Just have random searches of people's homes. Charge them fines if they don't comply with the law.

Certainly hope your joking. There is that whole thing about the Constitution and rights and all that. But I guess The Constitution of The United States of America is just a piece of paper. The President proved that...Hes been pissing on it for the past 6 years.

In any case, nobody here has the right to tell others what to do in there homes. Think about it this way, do you want me to start deciding what you can and can not do in your home?

                        • Also I'd like to say anybody here who drives an SUV has no right to comment on smokers "polluting your air". I may be putting pollutants into the air of a bar/restaurant but you SUV drivers are melting my ice-caps and driving up gas prices all because you want to look cool.

                          Grow up.

To those of whom who don't drive SUV's you have a decent non-hypocritical arguement. As a smoker and a bar employee, I understand the hazards that it creates for employees of the business. It's just that, in this particular case, I have a problem with the government dictating what these bars/restaurants can and cannot do on the issue of smoking.

As a compromise I would suggest a new tax levied against any bar/restaurant that decides to remain smoking. In addition smoking restaurants/bars must have reasonable accomodations for non-smokers. That way the business maintains its rights while the government is taking in a new tax that can go to cancer research, medicare costs etc.

                            • I've only been in a bar a couple times in my life, but I'm glad those who work there won't be subjected to such an easily avoidable negative health impact.

I just wish they would ban smoking on the beach (or at least some portions of the beach) here. I usually end up moving 2-3 times a day when it's crowded due to some inconsiderate person who decides to light up just upwind of me. That's not so bad, moving is easy enough. (Unless it's while I'm building a sandsculpture. Then I can't really move the a ton of sand around.) But what really sucks is that so many people use the beach as their personal ashtray. It's hard to find a square foot of sand that isn't sporting a cigarette butt during the summer months. Even the concientious people who take away their butts (which is very rare) are still leaving the ashes behind.
