So we have poor members, is that like a sign we need MORE poor members? NO. There's enough crap countries in already

      Meet the requirements, period.

I don't care if some people think yeah well that's racist. So be it. If you can't meet hte racist standards, then too bad. I won't by crying a river. If they meet the standards, welcome!

      It really is simple.

Just not poor ones with 80 million people that happen to have embargos against E.U. member states.

Pekka, stop exagerating with racism, turkey wont be let in, since in turkey you are sent to prison for "insulting turkishness", the cyprus problem, the armenian genocide denial, and many other things regarding human rights in turkey and their democracy, not because they are brown, except those near syria and iraq (mainly kurds), most turks cant be distinguished from greeks, and greece is in.

          edit:

Personally I think the EU has enlarged enough in the last couple of years, taking on another 100mill poor turks would be pushing it too far IMO. This is entirely apart from the fact I don't consider turkey to have the same morals/culture as the rest of europe. (yes, i've met poles, czechs, i've LIVED in greece and met plenty of turks).

I can almost see why the army is the way it is though. Not so long ago turkey was the head of the ottoman empire, THE muslim empire. For them to go secular is/was a big step and it's still not so outlandish for them to possibly go fundy again. As the article states it's still a hot topic in turkey whether they should become more islamic or not. I'd love to have a stable prosperous secular/islamic nation in the EU to set an example, but turkey just isn't there yet.

The army is essential to keeping Turkey the way it is, and essential to keep Turkey the type of country the EU might like to join. But many Europeans are so blinkered by their version of idealism they cannot see that, and therefore it is very likely Turkey will never join the EU.
But for the West, a secular Turkey within the EU is a great bulwaark against extremist Islam and is in Europes interests.

That's true, but that doesn't mean they have to be in the EU for that. After all we're already allied in the NATO.

And, btw, I'd be rather for Turkeys membership if they'd stop to do stupid stuff like described some posts above.

Turkey slaughtered at least as many Kurds as Saddam Hussein. Now, one gets hung for it and the other permitted into the EU? No ****ing way!

According to CIA's factbook sheet on Turkey, GDP per capita of Turkey on purchasing power parity is 8400 $. That compares with Romania's 8100 $ and Bulgaria's 9600 $, the latest incoming members. That's not really a terribly large difference.

You can say that Turkey's GDP per capita is stil below EU average, but that's a long shot from saying it's "dirt poor" or even "very poor".

You can also say that the EU is not ready for absorbing 80 million people with that GDP/capita, not "dirt poor" as it is, but then again the earliest timeframe for Turkish membership is in 10-15 years and the Turkish economy is growing on a scale of 6-8 percent a year; also foreign investment is pouring in. By that time, Turkey will have a much better economy, GDP/capita etc.

Besides which, if there was a "GDP per capita" criterion for membership of the EU, Romania and possibly Bulgaria shouldn't be let in to begin with .

Germany slaughtered far more Jews than either.

Nice tu quoque, junior. I was wondering who would bring it up. But Germany didn't harm a fly for more than sixty years and stands to her past, while in Turkey the slaughtering is ongoing and the government gets upset over this "meddling in inner affairs", if it is mentioned.
