I would be way too proud to pull this stunt. I would rather have written off the money than to dig through stinking trash to the amusement of a gas station employee, who might even remember you later and tell funny stories to bystanders.

I´ve done worse things for $300 than digging through garbage.

I've dug through trash for less, hell, it's hard to walk past a pile of rubbish without at least looking. though I don't go as far as the folks who do "trash audit" back in student housing, where the person who took out trash for the house would sort a week's worth of trash to see if people were recycling.

"Trash audit" Yea I see what you mean. When I was a boy, we had a trash container nor far from our school, and on the way we saw often older people digging in it for things they could still use. Well that was the 60's, and East Germans weren't rich. We used to make fun of it and ask "Tasty, isn't it?", which is of course tasteless, but children are cruel.

Now I am an older man myself, but I still can't be arsed to dig in the trash, at least not for a three digit sum. Of course there is a limit to everything.

I'm always amazed at the stuff that is missing the morning after I put my trash out. A busted chair, an old lamp, etc. Not amazed so much that someone would find a little value in it, but more so that someone is cruising the neighborhood every trash night looking. It's not that upscale of a neighborhood.

I had to fire a receiving clerk who absolutely refused to stay out of the trash dumpster.

I tried to make it clear to him. Tried to point out that if something came up missing, he would be suspected.
For whatever reason, he couldn't stay out of it.

When we were kids we'd go through the trash looking for porno magazines. It seems women don't like them when they find them and throw them away. Good for little impressionable little kids.

                      Um. on what?

I left that company 18 months ago, and the incident was a couple years before that. There's no way to connect me with it.
