So what makes the financial reporting regs different? Why should I trust the costs companies are (allegedly, according to a poll) incurring in compliance and furthermore what makes you sure that those costs (assuming they're accurate and that they are a good basis for projecting such costs going forward) outweigh the benifits of the protections provided by the regs?

Assuming your figures are correct (and 200 seems excessive, by the way) then:

If we take the average accountant's salary to be 75000$*200 = 15 million per annum to comply with the law

Georgia Pacific has a stated market cap of 12.5 billion dollars

So the annual cost is ~0.12% of their market cap.

      I don't see the problem.

That equates to about 5 cents a share at a share price of 45$

Try $75000 annual plus benefits loaded of 1.4 multiplier.

          Thats easily $100000/accountant.

So we're at $20 million to start

Try also IT expsenses required to allow Sarbannes to reported initially of on the order of at least $ 5 million.

Try also recurring auditting expenses of $5 million/annually

Try also opportunity cost required for execs to comply rather than work on aquisitions or other growth activities.

Gee all of a sudden these pennies per share become dimes per share.

I see a problem and realize this is for a BIG company not some small company needing every iota of cash in order to show earnings in order to attract more capital.

I couldn't understand the electronic ballot, so I think I voted down the line and clicked everything.

I refer of course, to the poll above.

It was strange... normally I vote for a bunch of Republicans, some Libertarians, and a couple of Democrats.

This year, it was no Libertarians, and only about 60% republicans, and 40% democrats... weird.

The amendment would have banned gay marriage, I voted against the amendment.
