Modern fishing methods can economically extract fish down to ridiculously low levels. We managed to fish the Grand banks into virtual oblivion. Cod was available elsewhere. Cod was overfished on the Grand Banks. It continued to be competitive to harvest fish from the Grand Banks even as the stocks there fell, meaning that the costs were not driven too severely by the level of fish stocks. If they had been then cod from other regions would have taken over the market.
