Yesterday the rent was due and he didn't pay it until I asked for it and he was $55 short, still hadn't paid his share of last month's utilities and still owed me $300 of the deposit even after I had given him 3 months to pay it. On top of that he was going to the bar and out to eat every night. The bottom line is he doesn't pay me on time and he mismanages his money making things difficult for the other roommate and myself. Then there is the issue that he is a slob and doesn't clean things up.
He's a nice guy but I just can't allow this to continue.
----Therefore the Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who wanted to reconcile accounts with his servants.
When he had begun to reconcile, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
But because he couldn't pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, with his wife, his children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
The servant therefore fell down and kneeled before him, saying,'Lord, have patience with me, and I will repay you all!'
The lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.
"But that servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who owed him one hundred denarii, and he grabbed him, and took him by the throat, saying,'Pay me what you owe!'
"So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying,'Have patience with me, and I will repay you!'
He would not, but went and cast him into prison, until he should pay back that which was due.
So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were exceedingly sorry, and came and told to their lord all that was done.
Then his lord called him in, and said to him,'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt, because you begged me.
Shouldn't you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had mercy on you?'
His lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was due to him.
So my heavenly Father will also do to you, if you don't each forgive your brother from your hearts for his misdeeds."
and Branchy-- I don't claim to be the lord nor I suspect- does Oerdin . .
But looking at your parable, it seems Oerdin has repeatedly had patience etc . If this was someone having a hard time, I would be in favor of giving them more time or helping them out but when they are spending lots of cash at the bar, I just think more "patience" makes you a doormat.

I had a flatmate once who had a thousand pounds worth of boots and shoes cluttering up the hallway, but he couldn't pay his share of some of the bills. He also did a runner after running up a £100 in phone calls that I was left with. Acted like he was a nice guy, but was actually a selfish bastard.
Oerdin, you're too much of a soft touch - if it was me, I would have kicked him out ages ago!
If he were really a nice guy, he wouldn't be taking advantage of you...
Thankfully whenever I have rented out a room it has usually been to a friend, or friend of a friend.
Though I do remember a random incident when I rented out my flat for a year and when I got back I found that the renters had stolen/removed my lavender plants from the garden! Everything else was fine, just those. I didn't care much but the g/f was furious and still talks about it 4 years later...
The guy doesn't have a checking account because he wrote so many bad checks that the bank closed it and now no bank will offer him another account until he makes good on all the bad checks he wrote. I of course didn't find this out until after he had moved in, or that his check was being garnished since he bought a Jeep and then didn't pay for it on time, and similiar type stuff (like not paying the cable or internet which he said he had).
I was afraid I would lose a good renter who paid everything on time and was neat because of a bad renter who was always trying to game people or get out without paying his fair share. Life's to short to deal with this so in 29 days his ass is out and I will change all of the locks.

I should have. He kept paying in cash which I didn't like due to the lack of tracability but I make a point of having other people around when I open the envolope so that I have a witness for exactly how much is in there. In the future it will be all background checks on people I don't know so I don't get any more ****bags.
I did that when I was overseas and renting out my entire house but I figured anyone would be able to pay $575 for rent + 1/3 of utilities. It seems I was wrong.
