What's the point of halloween again?

The stores are filled with Halloween, but I haven't really seen it "in action". Most people I know hate because it's just another consumer holiday. We already have something like Halloween in February-March (not sure when exactly), except it doesn't have this "scary" theme... but basically it's the same

No, the start of Lent. It has some ties and similarities to the (Catholic) tradition of Carneval though (in the sense that it precedes the Lent).

It's called Fastelavn, lit. "Lent Eve" in Danish. In German it's Fastelabend/Fastnacht. "Shrovetide" in English.

It was actually originally a Celtic holiday since Nov 1st was the start of the Celtic New Year starting the 6 month period of darkness (the year was divided half into light and dark periods). When the Celts converted to Christianity the church tried to rename Celtic holidays in order to make them into Christian holidays. Nov 1st became Hallowsounes (All Saints Day) and Oct 31st became All Hallows Eve (the night before all saints day). All saints day was the day where people were supposed to pray for the souls of the dead thus you start seeing the connection between dead things and Halloween.

Besides, Halloween is just a reason to have a party and to let the kids dress up and have fun so what's the problem?

For us it's a chance to see all the kids in the area and their parents to see how big they've gotten. With all the paranoia, it's gotten much smaller. We only had about 50 kids in all last night, and most of them were from the immediate area.

Its a kid thing-- My 3 year old loved dressing up and "scaring' the adults that answered the doors. For me its an easy excuse to say "hey" to the neighbors.

One neighbor had a dancing frankenstein ( doing the monster mash) which the kids loved. Its just a totally fun thing.

Last night it was about minus 15 celcius IIRC and we only saw about 60-80 trick or treaters total.

So dis for parents its not about getting or giving candy, its about children dressing up and having fun
