Sony also announced that production problems persist.

They are now only shipping 80,000 units to Japan for launch, down 20% from their already-reduced target of 100,000: http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/401.html

No word yet on North American launch numbers, but a Sony exec was recently quoted that the 400,000 number was "more of a target", not a guarantee...

I won't even consider a PS3 until at least the third or fourth hardware revision, when the price falls below $200.

That said, they'll also have to really somehow make up for the rootkits, the batteries, their arrogance...

I'm seeing some deserved firings happening.

First of all, you spend so much money to research and see what the consumer wants. So you can sell that to the consumer.

However, this is a clear case of putting blinders on, let's push this bluray thing forward even though it seems like everyone else is going with the other standard. SO what we do is put even more eggs in the same basket and really drive this bluray thingie.. What?

It's like they're stubborn, and now they got deep in it so they see they can't fail in it, rather throw more money at it, get in deeper. It was a bad strategy but let's reverse it by getting in deeper.

And now we have to price our baby almost twice what Xbox 360 is, helluva lot more than wii is.. and they're offering what the consumer wants, except you get bang for every dollar in it. Xbox 360 is great and they will end up on top of the console wars after PS3 flops a bit more.

I think the negligence of what consumers want and need, all this should result into letting some people go. Even if they make profit to cover this initial fall, they should let some people go. Because it's the most stupid thing they've done with the Bluray, pricing and getting deeper into it, and disregarding customer needs. It is as if the manager who decided upon this had last project with NGage

Yep. There's all kinds of algorithms out there for it.

With 3 3.2GHz cores, you can do some pretty high-quality upconversion.

The HD-DVD drive in the 360 is also way faster (in terms of loading/seek/etc) than the standalone HD-DVD units right now, because the hardware is so much beefier.
Its probably the loudest HD-DVD drive around, too. The original Xbox was too loud. I can't imagine what's it like with the 360.

One of good things I heard about the PS3 is that it makes a lot less noise than the 360. OTOH, is it me or is the PS3 ugly? Its a lot thicker than I thought. When you put it at the vertical, its sorta looks cool. But at the horizontal...

The 360 is only noticably loud when playing games.

When watching DVDs or on the dashboard, I can't hear it.

And yes, the PS3 is ugly. "Shiny pillow" is how some describe it.

Yeah, to be honest... I think the most attractively designed one this time around is the Wii; it helps that it matches fairly well now with the DS Lite.

Kinda a nice turnabout for Apple, since that GameCube looked pretty fugly.

It's impossible to look at Nintendo's current design aesthetic and not make that conclusion.

in what asher? while apple may lose ground with some products they also are gaining... and th fact they may lose marketshare in something they dominate means nothing. if ms lost 1% marketshare in the home os system would it be honest to claim they are losing marketshare in the cataclysmic way it implies?

Nintendo has lost marketshare with every console since the NES.

Apple has lost marketshare in the PC market for about 10 years consecutively.

I think they finally went up by .1 or something recently, though.
