I certainly understand what you're saying. Donnegal, at the very least they should have sprayed it on not swabbed it on those peaceful protesters, that would have been more than sufficent force. Have you ever experienced pepper spray? I was trained in using it, and got some residue on my fingers, an hour later, rubbed my eyes and they stung!

Investigators in the Eureka Police Department officer-involved fatal shooting death of Christopher Arrion Burgess, 16, of Eureka, are looking into information received regarding Burgess allegedly being beaten two years ago.

Christopher, his mother Margorie Burgess alleges, was beaten by Officer Terry Liles — the officer being investigated in the Burgess shooting — and another EPD officer during a probation violation arrest when Christopher was 14.

“He was sleeping,” Margorie said. “They just came in and started beating him; he was half asleep and wondering what the hell was going on. No wonder he ran away from the officers. He was scared.”

They should've used a stungun on the chained protestors.

I wish the EPD had that philosophy. I have tried to teach nonprofit administrators and the Eureka City Council empathy. I've failed as far as the NPO, the council (in it's reelction campaign is starting to sound like they are coming around, however I'd lay 3-1 odds against.)

I've met some reaal decent cops, one of whose help I really appreciated, talking a friend into going back on meds, when I felt she needed a welfare check. I reallly didn't want her in the ward, he made the alternative possible.

I wish more cops knew when to de-escalate.

Donegal wanna be Eurek's new Chief?

They're looking, and I'm serious, if you think you're qualifed, try it or pitch yourself as a consultant, the redwoods here are indiscribably gorgeous. Or pitch yourself to the council as a consulant. Come as knowledgable as you can. One very interesting site is: leap.cc , but also read up on more moderate ideas. The Council is balking at a review board, because they know disclosure of misdeeds will cost millions(2 wrongful death suits and lots more). (Non-Disclosure will cost tens of millions, but they aren't thinking about that). Come as well read up as posible, and contact the city at:
            http://www.ci.eureka.ca.gov/depts/ci...rk/default.asp or call city hall.

I don't have the education, experience and most importantly, the desire, to be a chief. Too much office work. I have applied twice for Sergeant (shift supervisior) but didn't get the promotion because of a lack of interview skills (the last job I even applied for was this one 9 years ago). I think a shift supervisior is as high as I want to go.

It's probably for the best. Me thinks the only way to fix the EPD is devine intervention.

Donegal, I've thought about your question, and I can understand how you might be concerned, dealing with gangsters all day, and see where you could be concerned, but do you think that people who are willing to spend months in jail for their love of nature, and their desire that the ecosysem won't get trashed are likely to get violent? pissed off, yes.

I also think, if you've never seen this before you might want to see this http://www.prisonexp.org/

Seen it. It's a good example of why bad apples can slip through the screening process.

And yes, I do think that someone willing to spend time in jail for their love of nature could be violent. Look at Greenpeace or PETA. Besides, to survive as a cop you have to assume that they could get violent. If you didn't, then you'd be up **** creek the day thay you thought they were passive and they were actually carring a knife.

                      The situation drove them nuts!

At the end of 5 days, Dr. Zimbardo had to remind the prisoners that he was a psychologist, not a warden, the guards agreed to unpaid overtime to keep the situation under control, and not a single prisoner walked out on his job, they of course had the constitional right to do so.

As for risk, I guess it's a matter of risk management, but why didn't they just spray?

A cop's job is inherently dangerous, and they can even get killed by a member of a prominent family.

Apparently, the kid ran because the cop beat him two years ago.

                              Another cop killing

This one, at least at the present, appears justifiable. That's 3 in 8 months. A fugitive child molester. After a 33 hour standoff. An FBI agent & a federal marshal came. After they left for the weekend, the EPD wasted no time, teargassing him 4 hours later. A few years ago, the city council spent a fortune on new cops to make the city "safer". There was maybe 1 incident like this every 4 years then.

Two reactions to that last one.

                                1. It appears justified . A suspect points a weapon at a police officer so deadly force in return is justifiable.

2.WTF is going on in this place. Isn't this just some sort of small town? Do the police there ever manage to settle anything peacefully??
