    • First of all I am from Michigan Second, please don't change the subject to something totally different.

I am just curious. You made a statement stating the Civil War was necessary to save the world. What do you think would have happened to destroy the world if the south had been allowed to peacefully leave the union?

you dont want to undervalue the south and the reasons for their desire to seceed but you also dont want to admit that the union thought it was right to keep the south from leaving...

and i think that the united states, the world we knew at the time would have ended and lead to a steep decline in the progress our nation lead. at one point or another the usa and csa would have fought...and it could have been in the modern era with far worse consequenes.

          • For starters, as far as telecommunications, Texas is 2nd only to California; neither of which are in the north.
Militarily, more military comes from Texas than any other.
It wouldn't shock me to find that California was second, especially considering the number of military installations there.

            Should I continue?

and you really think that the development of texas would have progressed like this had the yankee's not prevent a split? stop thinking in terms of now, and instead, think of back then. The flow of technology and invention has never been a south north majority. Im not saying that the north beat out the south completely (it was probably 55-45 north to south) in this regard but I believe the south would have been content to remain an agrarian cash crop state much like south america and african countries and never develop their economies had they won.

                • Texas isn't the farming community that other states are.
                  It never has been.

I'm comparing Texas. I don't know about all the attributes and contributions of other places as well.
I haven't been everywhere, but I've been to some.
I've been in California. It was a cash cow during the war.

Among the states, remote California played the least role in the American Civil War. It provided few troops or supplies, but its gold shipments were quite helpful to stabilizing the Union economy. Republican supporters of Lincoln took control of the state in 1861, minimizing the influence of the large southern population. The great success was in obtaining a Pacific railroad land grant and authorization to build the Central Pacific as the western half of the transcontinental railroad. California was settled primarily by Midwestern and Southern farmers, miners and businessmen. The southerners tended to favor the Confederacy, the state did not have slavery, and they were generally powerless during the war itself. California was home for powerful capitalists who played a significant role in Californian politics through their control of mines, shipping, and finance, and the Republican party. Plans were underway to split the state north and south, but the national government would not approve.

                    • It's already been established that Texas isn't like other states as far as rights and how it went into the Union.
I could quit debating now, to tell you the truth. My only point has been made.

Sorry, I don't get much opportunity to brag about football being from Arkansas so I take every opportunity I get.

As for the OP, are we seriously still talking about the Civil War? Now I don't believe there is anything wrong with being proud of ones heritage and being from the south, I am pround of that fact but I'm also for owning up to the problems that exist. The vast majority of people who go around waiving the Confederate flag have no thoughts of the legal debate on secession or about states rights. They are either closet racist (yes they do exist down here as they do in the north) or they are teenagers who think it's cool. The later would probably not have a clue as to what the CSA national flag looked like or even much else about it's history. Because if you read much into the history of the CSA it loses a lot of it's luster. I've always considered it a tragedy that so many good and decent men died for a cause that was at it's core vile and horrible. I get angry at Northerers who constantly throw the race issue in our faces but in the end they can do that because it has been a very large part of our past. It's our own fault however. In a better world we could have been proud of fighting a war over the right of secession but no matter how much we try and say it was all about that, the dirty truth of slavery is always there. No we didn't invent it but we tolerated it and profitted from it for way longer. I think it's time for the South to get new things to be proud of. Let's get rid of the poverty down here. That would be something to be proud of.
