I think he really believes them. The speech was obviously non-nice to the western perspective (be it because the speech was aimed at a domestic audience, or because it was aimed at alienating the west), yet he introduced the caveat "even if we assume the holocoaust is true".
IMO, this caveat mirrors his own thinking on the matter which is changing with time. If you read his Spiegel interview of last year, it looked like he was almost surprised the German journalists were guaranteeing him the holocaust really happened. And he already started talking about how Europe should have given territory to the Jews, instead of Palestine. Though it wasn't nearly as emphasized as in the current speech.

IMO, this kind of speech really mirrors how he thinks about the issue. This is why it's scary, but also why there's something reassuring here: if he continues thinking hard about it, he might continue to evolve, and his speeches will evolve too.

It's all political posturing. Bush does it, Ahmedinejad does it. In reality, they just want to do business but save face.

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

If Iran had any balls and strategy, they'd provoke US to attack and make it so that EU would be supporting that attack and possibly participate, call for global war and the first thing would be to attack Israel, and what ever is left, is left to defend Iran. Choosing your battlefield, and making it in someone elses land.

Start a new world war. But they don't have the balls. THey just like to talk. Fortunately.

I read his speech and didn't see much of anything he got wrong, although telling foreign born Jews to go back home is asking too much and aint gonna happen. But this is disturbing:

Ahmadinejad is possibly much worse than most people suspect. During the Iran-Iraq war, he was head of a program which sent children in mass waves to their deaths, sometimes as mine-clearers. He 'achieved' this by creating a cult of the suicide warrior, which was subsequently exported to Hezbollah, and beyond.
I thought it was the Marxist Tamil Tigers or some Sri Lankan group that started using suicide bombings and spread from there, but using waves of kids to clear minefields? I feel like Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now explaining why we would lose in Vietnam citing an incident where N Viets went into a village and cut off the arms of children who had just recieved vaccinations from our side. The horror...the horror...

The west can be or has been brutal dishing it out, but can you see the USA sending waves of children across minefields to clear the way for soldiers? That wouldn't happen even if we were on the brink of destruction as a country.

Iran is your enemy as much as it is ours. The first target might be Tel Aviv. But the second would be Camp Anaconda.
