Conversion is a highly charged political issue. Several states have passed laws this year making it harder to convert, and the mass ceremonies will infuriate Hindu nationalist parties that have been campaigning to stop lower caste Hindus changing their religion.
    Seriously, what is this bull****?

Yes, of all the Indians here at work, those that say that the caste system isn't important anymore are all from the upper castes.

A caste system will only work if people accept their position in it. IT's nice to see that some don't want to be slaves to it anymore. Good for them.

And yes, obviously it must still be important to some if they're angry that people have found an out to being pissed on.

Gujarat has reclassified Buddhism and Jainism as branches of the Hindu religion, in an attempt to prevent conversions away from Hinduism eroding the BJP's bedrock support.

In the cities, this is mostly true (that it's not important).

But sadly, it is still quite prevalent in many rural areas, especially in the less-developed states.

This is actually somewhat defensible. Buddhism could be considered an offshoot of Hinduism...

Only to the same extent that Christianity and Islam could be considered offshoots of Judaism, though. There are some substantial, even fundamental differences.

Funnily enough, many Hindus see Buddha as an incarnation of Vishnu.
