I've been trying to think of a math joke...but the closest I can come is:


A corporation needed a new C.E.O. The search committee narrowed the candidates down to the corporation's head of accounting, head of R&D and head of the legal department. All three candidates appeared to be equally qualified. So one-by-one the committee called them in for one final interview.

We only have one question, they asked each in turn: How much is two and two?

The head of accounting looked confused. "Look," he replied. "I know this is some kind of trick question, but I can't figure out what the trick is. What can I say? Two and two is four. It has always been four. It will always be four."

"Good answer," says the committee chief. "That shows good feet-solidly-on-the-ground thinking."

Then they call in the head of R&D.

"It all depends," he replies. "...whether you're talking about +2 or -2. The answer could be four, it could be negative four, or it could be zero."

"Good answer," says the committee chief. "That shows creative thinking."

Finally they call in the head of the legal department and ask him how much is two and two.

The head of the legal department looks left, then right, then leans in and whispers, "How much do you want it to be??"
