  • I'd Ask if They'd Buy Me a Plane Ticket, and Somebody Always Would...

There is this 22 year old Slovenian guy who travelled the world in two years with only his clothes and no money. Saw him on TV the other day.

He goes under the name Peacehiker.

Anyway, one thing he said was fascinating. He said: "All you have to do is ask for it. I had no money. I would come to the airport and ask people to buy me plane tickets. I would approach and ask "will you buy me a ticket?" and somebody always would. I got 21 plane tickets that way".

Anyway, lots of people travel around, many of them with little money. But if what this guy is saying is true, that he travelled with no resources at all, than that is really an amazing feat and I applaud him.

How feasible do you think that is?

Fools and their money are easily parted...I certainly wouldn't buy some random stranger a plane ticket...

I'll bet he had some great sob story....

My mother is dying. I'm trying to get home, but I got mugged and the thief took all my money. Can you buy me a ticket. Give me your address & I'll mail you the money. I promise.
Most people might turn him down, but eventually he'd find a sucker.

You don't even need that, if you hang out long enough and ask a thousand people I'm sure you'll find one eventually.

          Especially if you're white.

I used to had out money to beggars if they had a good line or a good personality.

Now, I work downtown, so I'm approached several times a day. That really hardens the heart.

If you're very rich (and there are some very rich people in airports), the price of a plane ticket is insignificant, and you have the satisfaction of helping a youngster in his journey of discovery.

I might've agreed to wrap him in a bag and check him as extra luggage, but that's as far as I'd go.

I work in the travel industry and what Spiffor says is very true.

To many people these days, taking a flight is as common as taking a bus.

If a wealthy person see's a person stuck in an airport, usually they will be compassionate enough to buy a ticket to the next stop, which mind you, might only cost between $100 - $300 (or even less, say Singapore to Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok) since the guy probably isn't travelling half way around the world.

If someone asked me for a free plane ticket they'd get a right earful.

This guy must have been really annoying if people were willing to pay hundreds of dollars just to be rid of him.

Yeah, my likely response would be to "get a job, you slob".
