Can't you just ask your peers where is good? I know all the good nuclear schools in the US, and I know a number of them arround the world.. and if I ask arround I am sure I would know all the ones arround the world.

UC Berkley, UC LA, UC San Diego, California Institute of Technology (CIT) would be my choices if I were interested in a career as boring as CS.

        1. Stanford University
        2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
        3. University of California Berkeley

Oerdin, I don't think Pekka is really looking just for lists. I think he can google them himself. What he needs knowledge from is:

I'm comp sci major, software engineering. However, I've kind of dumped the whole programming part as of lately, since I'm kind of fed up with it. Did that for some years now, and did that as a hobby before so I just kind of burned myself up on that subject.

Now, I'm focusing on information security. Comprehensive information security strategies, so I'm not looking to pick apart firewalls etc. I'm looking for _comprehensive_ things.. as we know, security is software, people, policies combined. Not just the software.

So, any school that can shine in this sector is for me. I'm looking forward meeting excellent hackers, crackers, social engineers, anything. So which schools would you recommend? They have to be known.

            So your institution isn't international?

Then assuredly any on that list would be better.

And I told him to ask his peers (people in his field). Apparently the only people in his field at his institution are Finns.. which suggests that it isn't an internationally respected institution.

I disagree. Schools which aren't even in the top 20 overall can be top 5 in a particular subfield.. which is what is meaningful in graduate school (which I think Pekka is in..).

JM, don't put words into my mouth. Of course it's an international school.

But I just figured I reach more people here and more easily.

Oerdin, right, right, but VJ pointed out that I'm focusing on information security. For example, I could enroll myself into a school that has great comp sci repuation and programs, however weak in the field of information security. This would help me none. But thanks for the list anyway, I am considering few of those as well, i.e. Berkeley.

I could as well stay here if I was not looking for the very top so .. that's why I'm looking for the very top.

If you don't know what subfield, then definitely a better overall school is better, as they will have more areas they are top in. But there is no guaruntee that those rankings are at all reflected in a particular subfield. It might be that University of Chicago is best at information security..

Well, considering that most of us here know nothing of information security (and no one who has posted has), I think that your peers would be better.

People in the field.. like your professors, should be able to give you a list off the top of their heads.

dude, don't argue with me if I shouldn't ask things in here or not, this is another resource, nothing bad in it. And the information security field in here is slim also, so it's not like I'll find anyone with knowledge (peers) on that either. I'm pretty much one of the very few who actually are doing this within the range of my peers. I will ask though, but I also like asking you. I've gotten bunch of tips already. I can follow them up by checking out those websites etc.

I'm finding this thread very helpful already.

If you are considering schools like Stanford, MIT, and Berkley then you had best have some extremely good grades as there are have a a hundred million Chinese and Indian International students who want into those schools.

I have good grades, I'll get good letters of recommendation etc. I'll still lose to about billion other applicants but I don't care since there are quotas
