It seems like the Dems will be taking both houses of Congress.

Having just taken a look at the Slate article again (after a recent update), here's what's really interesting:
If the numbers hold (and 3 weeks is a lifetime in politics, so that's a big "if"), the GOP will only win two Senate races handily. One will be Arizona, where they pretty much had a lock. But the other will be Virginia, where Allen will have beaten back a serious challenge and triumphed in spite of his own gaffes.
In other words, the big winner next month could be Allen, who could come out looking more like a viable GOP nominee than ever.
It does look like Allen will pull this one out, but he's done as far as presidential politics goes. He didn't run a good campaign this time around.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Hush, little facts like that mean nothing to a true believer. Just because we spend more then we make doesn't mean that we should *GASP* raise taxes or cut spending. The Republicans have exploded spending and are completely unwilling to cut it in any way.
I agree with this sentiment, but why ohhh why is the only alternative increase taxes rather than decrease spending, which seems to be the only answer teh Dems have.
From your own thread re: the failure of the Bush Tax cuts to promote growth (and the hack reporter that obviously didn't read the report) it is clear that the combination/extension of tax cuts and reduced spending was the best means for long term growth. (The worst scenario being a reversal of the tax cuts btw.) Why then do we continue to have a legistlative body and executive without balls enough to do what is required?

Take a look at the underlying strength of support.

Man, I can't believe that George Allen was such a stupid ****er. He was clear and free! Clear and free! Then he took the bait and made a complete ass out of himself, and now we're getting James-****ing-Webb as our senator.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.
George Allen actually is a crypto-racist though. Long story short, my gov class met him for a photo op and he made a big deal over the fact that we had a black kid. It kinda freaked us out.
Allen still has something like two and a half times the cash on hand (despite Webb having a very good quarter). So given that Webb's consistently down by a few points, he's still the underdog.

Well, up until ye olde "Macaca" incident, I was willing to giv ehim the benefit of the doubt. Now I'm going to grit my teeth and vote for Webb. Being racist is bad; Being public(and stupid) about it is unforgivable. There's no way I can trust him to not undermine discrimination laws now.

Yah, well, not to be TOO parochial about it, but Im still not comfortable with the cartoon Webb used against his primary opponent, nor with some of the generals backing him who feature prominently in his campaign lit. To be less parochial, his only substantive position on economic issues seems to be protectionist.
I may simply not vote for Senate this year.

There was a very interesting piece done by the local NPR affiate in Orange County which I was listening today. They were saying that it all comes down to turn out but that the Dems have for sure picked up 10 seats and that there are another 25-30 which are very close races. All the Dems need are five additional seats and they'll take the majority so if they win 1/5 to 1/6 of the neck and neck races they take control of the house. It looks like a done deal.
The Senate races seem to be more iffy. There's more movement inbetween each poll so it seems there are a lot more people still undecided or lukewarm about who to vote for in the Senate races. The more interesting election fact was that of the 10 state governor's races 9 of those outgoing governors are Republicans and historically most switches occur when there isn't an incumbant. That gives the Dems an opening on the state level which isn't likely to come again for a long time.
And although I'm all for voting out the Republicans, I do see the argument that it might be better to leave them in power for 2 more years so they get full blame.

Webb, Allen.
Lieberman, Lamont.
Does anyone know if vote swapping is illegal?

I haven't been getting the campaign ads here in Pennsylvania. Annoyingly, the only real Post coverage of the race has revolved around the macaca.
