  • Did Bush Accidentally Issue His First Veto?

Remember The Military Commissions Act that so many of us were *****ing about a couple weeks back, since it gives the President the authority to unilaterally declare anyone (including Americans) a terrorist or supporter of terrorism, and disappear and torture them. Congress gave him the bill over two weeks ago, then adjourned. Bush still hasn't signed the bill, according to Obermann as of Tuesday evening. That's about 16 days he's had the bill.

From the U.S. Constitution Article 1, Section 7: "...If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law."

Bush seems to have pocket vetoed the MCA. Since its his own legislation, I can't imagine he did it deliberately. He even issued a signing statement saying he looks forward to signing the bill.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

    Holy crap!

That'd be hilarious if he pocket vetoed his own MCA!

Wikipedia says the bill was presented to him for signing on the 10th of October. That'd mean he has ample time to sign it.

Edit: see last item - http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquer...9:SN03930:@@@X

He's signing the port security (and online gambling ban) bill on Friday, I'd imagine the MCA will be signed also.
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

Yes. First and only veto for this President. The man has ZERO ideals of his own, apparently.

See this attitude I don't get. People are so down on Bush for steamrolling the country with his uber-evil ultra-rightwing agenda. Yet the fact that he has excercised his veto far less than any president in a long time doesn't conflict with people's opinion of him, it just prompts another, contradictory negative view of him as not having views of his own.

So is he an evil ultra-conservative ramming his views down our throat or is he an empty headed figurehead going along with whatever Congress wants?

Bush is just evil Ozzy. Everything can be blamed on Bush.

It's his fault the Red Sox missed the playoffs.

Compromise. Empty-headed figurehead steamrolling the country with the neocon/big business agenda that happens to have a controlling interest in Congress, too.

Both. He's evil for throwing out the Constitution and the Geneva convention for his terrorist programs. He's evil for politicizing terrorism, and also for playing the faux-morality card so much (Republicans are NOT more moral or religiously right). On the second point, a term and a half should've produced some vetos. Veto a damn spending bill for bridges in Alaska or something. I don't really know where he'd use a veto, but I do like to believe that we elected a man, not a political party.

In any case, I should add that I actually do pull for the guy to be right with what he says. I really WANT to see his policies succeed in Iraq, but I just don't see it happening.

edit: Veto, or do something to pull the cost+20% Halliburton-Iraq contract!
