  • This is how evil Apple is

This is how smart Apple is.

Apple is regarded as one of the smartest companies out there. They understand people’s needs but more importantly their wants, and how they can make a buck out of it. I’ll show you how smart they really are, check out this story :

Mumbai, India. A place where iPods are not for the common man, or even the middle class man. We all listen to the radio. In early 2006, there was only one English radio station (the rest being Hindi) named GO 92.5FM. This means that instead of having to shell out money on an iPod, we would just listen to the radio, which played what we wanted. Here is where Apple came in. What Apple did is something no company has done before. They bought GO 92.5FM (it is not confirmed that they purchased the entire thing, but it is known that they had something to do with it going all-Hindi, it could have been a large pay off instead) and changed it into an all-Hindi radio station and renamed it ‘Radio One’. Why would they do that? Let all of the English music fans in Mumbai be deprived of our tunes. Simple: it boosted iPod sales. Soon after, we began to see iPod ads in newspapers. Since we could not rely on the radio, we HAD to buy iPods (or some other MP3 player, but since Apple bought the station lets talk iPods) so we can carry around our beloved English music.

Now that is why Apple is such a great company. They have the wit to outrun the other competitors. They made sure that this means more iPod sales, not more sales for Samsung, by clever timing of advertising, and hey, we all love iPods anyways, but they just made us buy one.
Wow -- isn't this incredible? Look at the Mac fan spin applied so liberally to such an evil act.

(Yes, it's lacking any real evidence, but the overwhelmingly smarmyness of the article is overwhelming and worth posting)

If I were an entrepreneurial Indian fella I'd set up a English language radio station and sell it to Apple for an overinflated price.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

        Mac Fanboi spin?

Are you sure? It sounds to me like a lot of... well, sarcasm.

Just wait and see - soon Apple starts buying up candian radio stations and let them send in hindi
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

You think too much of the author, who submitted this story to Digg. It's Mac sensationalism and he hoped to get money out of all of the hits, which is why I linked to a mirror instead.

Okay, um ... if there were adequate demand for an all-english radio station, wouldn't they just ... start one? It's not like India is a totalitarian state ...

Not that this worked for Apple, mind you -- sales are so poor they've just closed the only Apple store in India.

You'd be surprised. If India is anything like Canada, starting a radio station is a multi-year process that results in more rejections than approvals...

Yet they only had one english language station before.

It's business in a capitalist state, which means demand will be supplied.

Apple stores aren't necessarily successful. They don't have the selection to be successful IMO, though in certain areas they can be (magnificent mile etc.) Apple doesn't need to sell iPods direct-to-customer to sell a lot of them.
