Just tuned into CNN to see what is what.

They are reporting on how terrorists could use a small plane to blow up a building. If I'm still awake in 60 minutes I'll inform you that the same story is being played again.

Nope. Nothing going on here. Move along.

Maybe if we all went out and caused more newsworthy stories then they'd have more to report then the same one over and over and over and over.

Uhm, yeah I was using an extreme example make my point. It's all very easy to talk about specific limits for an average story, but these limits do not work for all stories.

It is simply impossible to set specific limits to how much coverage should be given to a story. Does a story deserves no mention, one mention a day, one mention an hour or continuous coverage? The answer constantly changes.

And people get hired in newsrooms to make these decisions, and fired when they make too many of the wrong choices.

Now, you say there is too much coverage. Others viewers disagree.

Ultimately, the answer is if you don't like the coverage, don't watch it or don't read it. I prefer watching CBC news. If I can't watch that, I'll watch BBC. My last choice is CNN. Why? Because of they way they cover a story and the amount of coverage given.

Did you just concede the point?

You may prefer to watch CBC, but others will watch CNN and they will be bludgeoned with the 'story' and as many details as CNN can dig up for extended periods of time.

Incidently, CBC Newsworld is not the same as CBC broadcast. We have a nice glass house here. Better not to cast stones.

Do you understand what subjective means?

The people who watch CNN may find they get just the right amount of coverage. Some may want more. Some may want less.

You might prefer reading the tabloids, while I prefer reading the IHT. To each their own.

We are discussing what is responsible to be reported, and how.

You are conceding the point that some of the media go way past anything that could be called responsible, and you are blaming the people who consume tabloids.

Latest on topic news: The school building was quietly demolished this morning in the early darkness. Plans are for it to be just a pasture. A new building will be built elsewhere.

Yes, I read about that. I hope the families will be able to cope with the tragedy of all this somehow. Their gestures of reaching out to the family of the murderer, as has been mentioned, is an indication of that - and of course highly commendable, to the point of seeming almost.. well hard to imagine.

I would also like to suggest that discussions of media responsibility, gun control and what have you be moved to separate threads from this one.

                      • Having the school destroyed by machine was a big decision for them. In the end, they opted for having it done with all haste. Within a couple of hours, the school was down, and debris gone.

The work was contracted. Amish weren't driving the machines. They are awesome at building things but I never heard of them ever taking anything down.
