tass: do you use a 3rd-party defragmener too?

Since defragmentation doesn't really make me more or less secure, I'll stay with Microsoft on that one.
It's just, given their track record on security, I'm not exactly filled with confidence.

ZoneAlarm is a good enough firewall. The criticism leveraged against it is mostly that it uses too many resources.

Also, to my knowledge, the Windows firewall in Windows XP does not act on anything for outbound traffic. I don't know what Kuciwalker is saying is prompting him to allow programs out to the internet. I usually don't use Windows firewall for this reason, and I just cut it on and it didn't give me any prompt when I tried to connect with several programs. Is there any further information on this matter?

That's odd, since it complains all the time "application X is trying to connect to the internet: approve/deny?"

I don't believe you. Give us a screenshot.

It should, but that's not my point. I believe in checks and balances. I have 2 different programs for a lot of tasks.

I also specifically use it to block... certain programs on my wireless connection so that I don't go over the bandwidth cap by accident.

Just change the permissions and try connecting again. Then take the screenshot.
I, for one, have never seen Windows Firewall behave in such a fashion.

Apparently I had Symantec's (corporate) firewall running in place of Windows. I didn't remember I'd switched them when I installed it.

I'm behind a router and no firewall at all... told windows security center to stop whining at me for having no firewall and all is good, apart from AVG behind unable to update itself every week for some reason, have to force it do manually.
