  • Leek girl and Levan Polka - an internet phenomenon

So sometimes the internet carries an inertia all of it's own, creating phenomenon that before the existance of the internet never would have been.

In late april, 2006, this spread around the internet:

It is basically an anime of a girl spinning a leek, while singing an incomprehensible song. People around the internet however, began to research where the song had it's origins, and on July 10th, 2006, Timo Väänänen from the Finnish band Loituma had this to say in a local newspaper:

I first found out there was something going on when I looked at the statistics of my own web page and then I realized that something weird is happening because there is so huge traffic there. And most of the traffic came from Russia and then I started to track down what is happening and then I found this video. And well, I have no idea what this video is about, and what this girl is about.

So basically the band Loituma wrote and performed the song, which can be seen in it's entirety here:

But the story doesn't stop here. In late august of 2006, a german group of computer video graphics performers, released the song in a digitalized version with catchy graphics. The world is weird, isn't it....to think it all started with an anime of a girl spinning a leek

Here is the very funny digitalized version:

The internet is stupid. Throw rocks at it.

Nope - this is a rather interesting case for social studies, but I see your point m8 :-)

        That song drives me nuts.

Not bad, but admittedly, the last one gets a little strange when running SMAX at the same time
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

That's Ievan Polkka, thank you. Or Ievan Polka, it doesn't really matter how you spell the latter word... but it's not Levan anything. Yes, in case you're wondering, Finland *is* responsible for this Internet phenomenon, too.

I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

The song reminds me of Karelian folk songs. My grandma liked to sing those. So what's the point of this thread, anyway... are we creating a new thread for every senseless Internet fad now (start here)?

"great thread... or THE GREATEST thread?"

                            ask google

                            or alternatively, ask wikipedia

                            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leek :
The leek (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum (L.) J. Gay) is a vegetable belonging, with onion and garlic, to the Alliaceae, the onion family. Also in this species are two very different vegetables: The elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum) grown for its bulbs, and kurrat which is grown for its leaves in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East. The leek is also sometimes classified as Allium porrum (L.)
Oh, and the German über-monotonous-techno-"remix" makes my ears bleed, not unlike the German-made electronical "remixes" of famous pieces of classical music I've sometimes stumbled upon. If you'll ever see ads of German-made musical remixes, run.
