They were undoubtably strong, pure is a meaningless word. Their flaws were that they didn't introduce and enforce their society into others, and just enslaved others, becoming an economic substrata of soldiers-rulers from a fully fledged society, their inherent gender roles. And while the fact that they were building character and educating youth in a conscious manner is applaudable, they did have plenty of misses, like the lack of inter-gender relation education. This probably resulted in a society full of these almost charicature-like ubermenschen that had no idea on "how to be the ladies' men".

Well, the were strong in the military sense, but their society became a dying society, not so much during the Persian wars but certainly later, and had much more inner problems in that aspect than many other poleis. It's one of the reasons for Sparta's decline, because their ideals of strength lead to an exclusiveness which resulted in less and less children becoming full citizens (and so Spartan hoplites) to balance out losses, and they weren't able or willing to let others into their club as equals on a grand scale.

IIRC, they also humped little boys. I think that can go on the bad things list too.

Can't blame just Spartans for that. Seems to have included Macedonians, other Greeks, Persians, etc. One wonders whose little boys. Nonetheless, sex wasn't just for boys with girls in those days, and they weren't embarrassed about it either.

There's some story about a right of Spartan passage being a fight to the death with another boy of the same age. If that's true, the population would be rather limited, losing half its males at puberty. Az, what's up with that?

Az, feel free to discuss the topic, everyone else hijacks threads, you might as well too.

It seems that any culture focused entirely on strength and war has more pressing problems than just gender relations.

This should be in the History Forum.

I remember hearing/reading that they went around naked all the time. This was to shame people into being physically fit.

I know it would shame me, I get physically disgusted when I see myself naked and so am generally not.

Your nips are still hard? Are you saying that the trailer made your nipples go hard? So the trailer aroused you in a weird way or was the air conditioning really high?
