I think they felt they were going to get us into some very close and bloody fighting, and they were initially. That's why Medusa was paused.

When the operation was resumed it was with overwhelming air and artillery support. That's why the Taliban got the snot blown out of them and why so few casualties were taken by us, the Brits, the Dutch, and Afghan government forces when the operation was resumed.

Didn't know where else to put this, but it's too good not to link...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan said that after the September 11 attacks the United States threatened to bomb his country if it did not cooperate with America's campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Musharraf, in an interview with CBS news magazine show "60 Minutes" that will air on Sunday, said the threat came from Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage and was given to Musharraf's intelligence director.

"The intelligence director told me that (Armitage) said, 'Be prepared to be bombed. Be prepared to go back to the Stone Age,"' Musharraf said. "I think it was a very rude remark."

Only an American would be proud of such a thing. Anyway, he'll have his revenge now, as the Taliban transfers all of its fighters to the Afghan side of the mountains and they get an unrestricted flow of reinforcements and supplies - all thanks to Pakistan's separate peace with the Taliban.

It's apparent to me that the NATO and Canadian army commanders are lying about the casualties inflicted in Operation Medusa. The original report, issued before the deaths of 4 more Canadian soldiers, was far more conservative, estimating about 500 Taliban killed, a figure that was contested by the Taliban and local civilians. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...eration+medusa

I also saw a TV news report the night before the suicide attack that showed that the Taliban had largely escaped. There was footage of the area which had been under attack. There was lots of damage, but few bodies. A Canadian officer admitted that many Taliban had withdrawn prior to the final ground attack.

Now, it seems that the casualty figures are being inflated in order to counteract growing anti-war sentiment amoung the Canadian public. It's not just the Harper government that's lying. It's the generals too.
