Absolutely the wrong amount of money to go away..

Besides, if they don't take you into the ownership part of the company, so what? THey get rich, you don't. They get poor, you get fired. DOesn't match the risk in my eyes, if in fact you're in a big company with advancing options. Just too soon... take some time.. you'll have better perspective when you've worked there for a while.

Good point and more relevant now than in the past.
I guess I'm just an old timer that still gives a little credit when loyalty is involved.

But it's the company that is hiring so you have to play by their rules if you expect to be hired.

And that's why the employer has responsibility to _himself_ to stay competitive, to update knowledge at all times, in order to become an asset and not merely just a pawn.

But sure, using employees as pawns is questionable and it sucks. You just have to make sure you're able to have those attributes that they pay for, now and tomorrow. Naturally this is easier said than done.

I see the same attitude in academia all the time between professors v post-docs or lab techs. Professors will keep their moves secret until the last minute and many have few qualms about the people who get left behind. Woe unto the productive post-doc or research track assistant-professor who wants to move though. Once the cats out of the bag that you're looking you may get the boot (and there's nothing you can do about it either).
A friend of mine basically got screwed out of his PHD because his advisor decided to switch employers half way through the process. It basically became either you start over on a new project with a new advisor or just forget about the PHD. Two years of his life wasted because of that *******.

After sleeping on this I think Rah is right. 13% isn't enough money to burn a bridge and become a job hopper.
I agree. Now 25% would be tempting.

Depends-- If all other things are equal, any extra money is tempting but the reality is that all other things are seldom equal

My employer is smart on the retention issue. A bonus of typically 25% is pretty normal plus we have stock options that vest over 3 years. If you leave you will be leaving a decent value in options behind.

I could make more up-front coin at a law firm but with much more requirements on hours, less time off, more pressure and just a lot less fun workplace

I really really like my current job and having had less fun jobs, I know that jumping has risks. They would have to offer me a LOT more to get me to move. As it stands, I probably could only get a big jump if I took on a lot more pressure-packed role. Frankly I don't know that it would be worth it

Not sure if the other job is really better or significantly better. That will have to be your call. Also realize it is not uncommon to have some buyer's regret after starting a new job, particularly if there were other options around.

If you do bail, do not discuss the money. Just tell them that you made a mistake accepting the offer and want to leave immediately. Don't get into a discussion on why.

The other company revised their offer upwards so it is now a 18% increase. I'm going to take the money and do exactly what you said.

                    It has been done.

What's more once I really dug into the health care plans I find I actually get better coverage for less money plus I get one more vacation day per year for a total of 24 (including sick days). Not a bad deal.

I find it entertaining that the employeer desreves the loyalty, when what loyalty do they offer the employee? Those that have been laid off get im sorry we are downsizing and your out. I my self took an agency position aside from staff because they pay more. I in turn took the risk of not having steady work for a period of time. and have to travel away from my family at times. Bottom line is it paid off, i got steady work for a while and i have managed to save a big chunk of money which i can now invest and work up to 3 days a week and not have to sweat am i gonna go broke. I am now in a postion to still work agency here in my home town and take a prn position at a local hospital with 3 days a week. Jumping ship isnt all that bad, if you leave on good terms, Im going back to my old company prn and still gonna do agency the times im not there

Heck, since Euros are so unproductive at work you lot might as well be continually on vacation.
