  • Utah vs. Nevada!

I was browsing through wikipedia the other day when I came, somehow, to their entry on Burning Man. Naturally, like any decent American, my first thought was that for that last week every August, a single nuclear bomb could pretty much eliminate our country's problems with drugs, venereal disease, unemployment, and really creepy stuff impersonating art. But I dismissed the thought. Partly because there are innocent children and law enforcement officials stuck there along with the filthy hippies, but mostly because I couldn't imagine a situation in which a nuke would in fact be dropped on a temporary city in the middle of Nevada.

Then it hit me: the most licentious state in the Union is directly west of the most uptight and priggish one. That's a disaster waiting to happen. The only question is, if war broke out, who would win? For the sake of argument, we're assuming that outside forces do not interfere except insofar as they do already to keep the otherwise uninhabitable wastelands afloat. All the shipments of food, water, retirees with gambling problems, etc. continue, though they may of course be intercepted.

    Now, food for thought:

-Wiki says Nevada's population is about two million, and Utah's about two and a half.
-Utah's population is probably in better physical shape due to pretty much everything being illegal or discouraged there (and the exact opposite being true in Nevada). Probably half of Nevada's conscriptable population would get the DTs in the trenches. Not good.
-Utah, due to the lingering presence of the polygamist Fundie branch of the Mormons, probably also has a good supply of expendable teenage boys to use as cannon fodder.
-The two states may actually be equally well-armed, between Nevada's lack of oversight and regulation on anything and Utah being a conservative bastion. Nevada may have a slight edge in firepower, but this should be balanced by their relative lack of proficiency; some of those Utah kids have been hunting deer with .22s since before they were potty-trained or something.
-Utah has Comrade Tassadar, among other polytubbies; Nevada has Dis.
-Nevada has Area 51, and thus may have access to experimental combat aircraft assuming the Feds clear out when the place becomes a war zone and don't take the stuff with them. However, that's a HUGE if. Also, if there are in fact aliens in Area 51, they will almost certainly side with the Mormons due to the similarity of their beliefs.
-Nevada may have an elite prostitute special forces division; the people of Utah do not aim very well while averting their eyes.
-Nevada has a LOT more cash. Outside intervention is verboten, of course, but they could bribe the enemy pretty effectively.

So, who do you think would win?

EDIT: Dagnabit, I forgot the poll!

What a thread. A war between Utah and Nevada.

    Utards vs. Hookers and Gamblers.

I go with Nevada. They both count on good luck.

          Nevada hands down.

Besides, nothing wrong with burning man. It's weird enough to be special and cool.

my kind of thread. . I would sign up.

but actually mormons get along pretty good with my state. In fact, many of them visit here to gamble. And may mormons live here.

It's easy for them to ignore their morality if it means making money. And this is where the jobs are. we have a sizable mormon community. In fact, my fathers family became mormons after they came over from Germany. Yes that is strange, but germans are weird people. They were one of the first followers of Smith. My father wasn't mormon though. He was the same religion I am: Don't give a ****.

And Las Vegas originally used to be a mormon outpost on the old spanish trail all the way into California (California also has sizable mormon populations). We still have the ruins of the mormon outpost/mission on Main street (or is it las vegas blvd- I can't remember it's been so long since I've been there).

Now for an in depth battle analysis.

First of all we'll start with terrain. Most people think of Nevada as desert, but we do have sizable mountain ranges interspersed with the desert. Utah also has desert, though more of it is high desert. But utah also does have rougher terrain and more mountains. Serious advances into either state would be hazardous, but I'd give the edge to Utah advantage.

Military bases. Can federal military bases be used? If so, then Nevada has a huge advantage. We have Nellis Air Force base, Fallon Naval Air station, an army ammunitions depot (if they haven't closed it down yet), and last but not least. A nuclear testing facility. We haven't tested nukes in many years. But I'm sure they have a few nukes sitting around we could use on Salt Lake City. But the fact is, most of the land in Nevada is federal land. Though Utah also has a lot of federal land as well (national parks, conservation areas etc.).

Industrial capacity. Henderson still does have industrial capacity. Not as much as the old days (people don't like living near things that explode- See Pepcon explosion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PEPCON_disaster ). But they still have manufacturing capacity. Reno has IGT which manufacture slot machines sent all over the world. I'm sure the slot machines could be converted into some kind of war machine. . I can only imagine what that would look like. both states have sizable mining operations- so that is equal. I'm not sure of Utah's manufacturing capacity, but I don't think it equal's Nevada's.

Populations are similar. Though Utah's would be more fanatical. We have no community cohesion where I live. But I think a bunch of Californians would volunteer for our defense.

Weapons. I'd give the edge to Nevada. Utah doesn't have that large of deer (and not that many), they don't have a sizable hunting community that I know of. And Nevada has many gangs in Las Vegas. They have lots of weapons. Not to mention the army ammunitions depot, we could raid that if we had to.

Objectives: as I mentioned above terrain would be tough. Would we have to capture and hold their state? Or just ***** slap them back a few decades? I think we could do the latter. No way could we hold any territory.
