I predict the Harper government will eventually fall over this issue, and they will lose the subsequent election.
Not sure if this issue will do it or not but it will certainly prevent them from obtaining their coveted majority. Fall election rumours have disappeared as you may have noticed.

I have friends I studied geology with in uni who now work out at the Elk Hills field near Bakersfield, CA. That field was discovered sometime around 1900 so it is about as mature as a field gets yet they still have dozens of geos running around it.
I understand you think you know some stuff about oil and geology but you are mixed up. Geologists are involved in fields from discovery to shut down and even after shut down there are geologists, like me, who do much of the environmental remediation design and clean up. It's what I do for a living and geology is a small specialized field so you pretty much know most of the people in the field in your area. I know my line of work.
And while I am non-technical, I know mine. Geologists play a much smaller role in oilsands development ( whether mined or SAGD) than they do in conventional plays. It is the sheer size of the fields and their relatively homogenous nature that reduces the role.
Itys sort of like the geophysicists role in a "resource play"- They are still around but when you have massive fields where you are not looking for traps, their role is very much diminished.
A conventional play?? a geologist is an important part from start to finish

The libs will not want the governmnet to fall yet IMHO. They would look a bit silly crushing a government for a Liberal designed mission.
The lack of election rumours are welcome. I don't want to go to the polls yet again to elect another minority. The Cons want time to show Harper isn't scary while the Liberals need their new leader out there, some distance from Gomery and also time to get their finances in order

The rumours had the Conservatives pulling the plug. What appeared to be a decent chance to grab a majority not too long ago has disappeared quickly.
