If I had the money to buy good meat all the time, I'd go that route for protein, but as it is I drink a protein shake we sell at both gyms I work at (I get a 30% discount at one of them, guess which I buy from... ) that has 32-34g of protein depending on the flavor (The chocolate one has 2g extra protein? Huh?). 2 or three of those on a day I workout and at least two good meals puts me near the "1.5g protein x Your body weight" figure suggested to gain muscle mass (1.5 x 125lbs when I started = 188g). I've gained about 10lbs of muscle since May, but I'm not a gym nut, I just put in an hour or so after I've gone off-shift and we've closed for the night. I workout up to 4 times a week if I'm being really good, twice if I'm being lazy and none if I don't care.
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

Why is gaining muscle mass, calculating food intake by the gram and comparing workout schedules so important to you guys?

You don't need 10 lbs of extra muscle mass to post here. Or is it in the FAQ now?

I buy chicken breast when it's on sale for 1.00-1.50$ a pound.

        1 pound chicken breast = 142 g protein

I resent that! Rowing (in machine) is fun. And seems to be effective, aswell.

Short answer: Protein shakes are an excellent source of protein, and whey is good for you even if you aren't working out. It's a no-brainer. You can get 6lbs of whey protein for $20 at Costco.

That's been a goal of mine (one that I haven't always worked towards) for 15 years or something. I kept on just expecting it to happen. Then I started doing organized exercise.. but I still had a gut.

Now, I get obese if I don't exercise 3 times a week, and I haven't yet discovered the ammount of exercise and dieting needed to become fit.

                      For 15 years? Damn...

Sucks to have a body type like that. My brother lives off of bacon (eat entire meals of it), pizza, cup o' noodles and beer and doens't have an ounce of body fat.

For me personally, nothing goes through the calories like interval running...

Protein shakes provide a minimal amount of protein (10-15 grams per bottle, IIRC). If you're lifting you want to consume 100+ grams of protein every day (I try for 125-150). Drinking 10 of those things a day would be both unpleasant and expensive.

You can get a two pound jug of the powdered mix stuff at Super Target for only $17.00 AND it provides something like 40 grams of protein in one serving.

Anyway, I think I will try something less drastic -- two protein bars (20 grams per bar) twice everyday, and in addition, drink more milk than I do now, or start eating some cottage cheese on a daily basis.

And, hopefully, give scrapping your current workout routine some serious thought.

I just never got to the point of feeling confident that I can safely do free weight lifting but maybe you're right -- maybe it's time to do that instead of the weight machines.

So what are the weight machines there for, anyway?? Decoration?

There's nothing unsafe about free weight if you have proper form (big problem of mine) and you use an appropriate amount of weight. But its not really free weights vs. machines its the sort of exercises you're doing, just switching to free weights and doing the same sort of exercises that you've been doing with the machines probably won't help much.
