I would be interested in some thoughtful critique of it.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. I'm not sure what they expect. He is the Pope, head honcho of a "rival" religion. What is he supposed to say? "Y'all convert to islam now, hear me?"
And, indeed, if some powerfull imam advocates the total destruction of west, and killing every man, woman, child and animal therein...
"Controversy? Outrage? We're just drinking our coffee here. Hey, you have a big beard, westerner... You're not trying to impersonate teh Prophet, are you?"
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"
Honestly, I got the impression that the Pope was referring to the militants who, in the name of Islam, use violence to achieve their goals.
Since it appears that the Pope didn't explicitly state that, it leaves a window for interpretation, a window that's going to be jumped through by those same militants and anyone else who chooses to think the Pope was insulting Islam in general.
Too many people on this world have died in the name of God. All this will do is add to the body count, and I condemn anyone who advances the word of God, Allah, Artemis or whatever the hell they choose to call their deity through the use of arms and terrorism.

It would have been better if Ratzi had also used an anecdote about the Inquisition or something, illustrating Christian violence, and then speaking of the wrongness and folly of that. Probably wouldn't have stopped the Muslims from throwing another violent hissy fit, but anyone with an ounce of reason would then have no cause for complaint.

Across the Islamic world Friday, Benedict's remarks on Islam and jihad in a speech in Germany unleashed a torrent of rage that many fear could burst into violent protests like those that followed publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.
By citing an obscure Medieval text that characterizes some of the teachings of Islam's founder as "evil and inhuman," Benedict inflamed Muslim passions and aggravated fears of a new outbreak of anti-Western protests.
The last outpouring of Islamic anger at the West came in February over the prophet cartoons first published in a Danish newspaper. The drawings sparked protests — some of them deadly — in almost every Muslim nation in the world.
Some experts said the perceived provocation by the spiritual leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics could leave even deeper scars.
