I don't know how easily that weapon could be modified to operate in a fully-automatic mode. From witness statements it sounds like the rifle he had was fired in semi-auto mode the whole time. It seems likely that the weapon he used was the one he was pictured holding.

Apparently he killed himself. One of the cops got him in the leg after he'd taken 2 hostages, that's when he took out his gun and shot himself in the head. La Presse newspaper has a detailed account of the whole thing.
Two cops were already at the school for a minor drug bust when he got there. He had a duffle bag with a shotgun, but panicked when he saw the cops and handed the bag to a bystander - a lawyer - and then started shooting at the students while heading towards the school entrance.

So true. It made me sick watching Columbine from the local news helicopters and thinking that one fireteam of soldiers would have done a much better job than the battalion of police who let several people bleed to death while they fvcked around. Soldiers counterattack and evacuate the wounded.

The truly disgusting thing is that the police were able to actually watch the Columbine shooters commit mutual suicide in the library via surveillance cameras, but then waited an additional half-hour before entering the building. You can see the video on YouTube by searching "massacre".

The vast majority of AKs in North America are semi-auto only. Of course auto-fire is overrated in its usefullness in a massacre where your victims aren't all bunched together in a hallway or something. It is useful (particularly psychologically) in a firefight, but its usefullness must be balanced with the fact that your ammunition is going to be depleted much more quickly and with a significant loss in efficiency.
