    Perhaps a better criticism of his argument would be that he wasn't really answering the question. He answered 'who is most likely to be the next Great One', when the question was 'who do you build your team around'.

    You're doing the very same thing he is, Asher - ignoring or devaluing factors contrary to your argument. There's nothing wrong with it, it's called 'argumentation', but you both do it.

      I don't ignore them, I dismiss them.

      I understand how younger=better when you're building a team around them, but it's far from the most important factor (let alone the deciding factor in this case of a couple years of both very young players).

        Dismiss is a synonym for devalue, but less polite and implies less thought on your part

          Devalue and dismiss don't necessarily mean the same thing in my books -- devalue implies it has some merit but its value is lessened, while an argument is dismissed when it's irrelevant or nonsensical.

            That's what "synonym" means, words that have similar meanings but not the same. In this case, Dismiss is the more extreme form of Devalue, as Devalue more accurately means "lessen the (implied) value of" while Dismiss means "imply a null value".

            His argument is not nonsensical or irrelevant, it is simply not the entire part of the story. Nor is yours. You both are looking most strongly on one part of the story, that which supports your belief. He considers the fact that Phaneuf has a good chance to be injured to make him a risk to build your team around, while you consider his leadership qualities to be a good thing to build a team around. Neither of you are wrong, and you both make useful and good points.

              Hmm. No, I consider it nonsensical to choose who to build your team around looking at the age difference between an 18 and 20 year old.

                If there is no other significant difference (between Ovechkin and Crosby), then why not make the decision based on that? Particularly because he makes the argument that the 18-22 period is one of significant physical maturation (which is probably correct). IE, Crosby still has three years left of getting bigger and stronger at an absurd rate, while Ovechkin has one. That's a big difference.

                He does not dismiss Phaneuf on the age grounds specifically.

                  Ovechkin and Crosby differ by two years.

                  And I realize he didn't dismiss Phaneuf based on age alone, but also the fact that he plays hockey (eg, a physical game).

                      Domi won't last the season, is my prediction. He already insulted Alfredsson (when Alfredsson is not there, of course) and proved to be a Leafs fanboy...

                      I liked the hardcore music they played, and then all of the players looked so scared/timid...

                      And I now see why Leafs fans are so hardcore on the past. It's been like a half an hour now of just gushing about how great the Leafs were in the 50s/60s...

                        I can't believe Spezza didn't get any points against Toronto. A familiar result for the Leafs, though.

                          I've got Spezza in my other league...he won a lot of faceoffs and is +1 also, which is nice.
