I'm less pissed off as a Vancouver fan than a hockey fan in general. Good to see Clarke has a handle on what led to the lockout problems in the first place. I guess upcoming group two free agents with 12 career goals to their name can look forward to $1.9 million contracts next year.

Clarke's gambit has far greater implications for the rest of the league than Wang's, though. The Dipietro deal can sit in a bubble until the end of time, but massively jacking up the salary of a young, relatively unproven skater will have repercussions when it comes to arbitration next year.

It could also have an affect on Kessler's career. If he puts up another 8 to 10 goals, Vancouver might be a very cold place all of a sudden in the summer of 07.

Then instead of having a team looking out for him and wanting to nurture his development, he'll be in the deep end of unrestricted free agency with many teams at or near the cap and nobody willing to cut him even an inch. He'll be in the put up or shut up category of players and he could get slotted to a role that will not be good for his career.

Honestly, I've been waiting for a GM to do it. It's a very smart move, and one I wish Gainey had did to a team like Ottawa, if it was possible.

One big problem with it might be if as reported his contract can be used as a comparable in arbitration...

That's the worst reprecussion I've heard of.

I wonder what Phaneuf will get from the arbitrators?

Sutter doesn't do arbitration. You'd have to be dumb to.

Phaneuf will be ****ing expensive. Everyone knows that.

But he's worth every penny.

Calgary has a killer, killer team locked in for two more seasons. After that point Kipper and Phaneuf are both up for new contracts and someone will have to go.

Sutter gets to make an offer, or three. Phaneuf gets to accept or reject them. If they aren't enough, he gets to file for arbitration. Sutter doesn't get a choice other than to sign Dion before he files.

A lot depends on how greedy Dion gets. If he likes cash, and listens to his agent as he looks around at $5 mil contracts for mediocre dmen, it'll be off to arbitration, cause no way is Calgary going to want to go to 5 mil/ 1 year or 6/7 mil 2/3 year.

Of course, this assumes he continues to rip it up.

Ouch. I just checked. Iggy and Kipper (along with some others) come up as UFAs at the same time Dion is up in two years. I'd be willing to bet Sutter is working overtime next summer working on extentions.
