  • Today , let us celebrate . . . . .

. . . . . the hundredth anniversary of satyagraha , Gandhiji's unique non-violent method for winning the freedom of India . The first satyagraha was launched in South Africa by Gandhiji on September 11th , 1906 .

    Gandhi's 9/11

    What happened on September 11 , 1906

    Wiki on Satyagraha

The best part about Gandhian methods is that it resolves the situation without fostering enmity . There is no loser when a Gandhian struggle succeeds .

The assumption , however , is that the person who you are aiming the satyagraha at has a conscience , and can be made to feel ashamed of his actions , and that his humanity can be appealed to . It would not have worked had the Jews used it against Hitler , nor will it work against bin Laden and his cohorts .

But it can be used for many , many other things . For example - the Gandhian way for Iraqis to protest against the American occupation would be to simply sit outside the American military camps and refuse to eat any food until the Americans leave . When American soldiers see that a great mass of Iraqis are sitting and dying because of them , they will be completely and totally demoralised - they will begin to question their own humanity in a way their normal military duties , which could be justified by ideology , never would have forced them to . America will lose support in every forum , all over the world . Even FOX News won't be able to put a positive spin on protestors starving to death .

But that is not the culture of Iraq . The violence will continue there , unabated .

I sometimes wonder at the way different cultures can produce different men . The symbol of India in the West today is Gandhi - and the symbol of the larger Muslim world is Osama bin Laden . It is difficult to even hold the thought of the two of them in your mind at the same time .

I just thought it appropriate that , instead of posting the usual 9/11 thread , I post a thread symbolising something different , something positive .

what do you think ghandi's opinion of present day india would be?

He wouldn't like it very much . His ideology was lost almost immediately after his death .

Wuss? Gandhi was a fighter. Gandhi had true courage, true resolve. If he'd taken a gun and shot at British troops, how long do you think his little revolution would have lasted?

By his will alone he freed an entire country. And he didn't have to hurt a single soul to do it.

I disagree. But this is a celebratory thread so no reason for me to rip him a new one.

Gandhi is often misunderstood . Maybe , Pekka , you do not know of the times when simply the threat that he would starve himself was enough to bring the Brits on line ? The gutsy thing was that he would have gone through with , and did go through with on many occasions . For example , when there were communal riots in come cities of India during partition , he went to a city and declared that he would not consume food until the rioting stopped . And stop it did . That was his power . He wielded more power than maybe any man in history .

Not here to argue with you guys, obviously Ghandi is a big hero to many so... like I said, I don't want to start stupid things here and upset you guys with the truth. I am sure and we can agree that he was a great man, as in he had lots of influence. And he was not ALL bad.

OK . You are free to hold any opinion you wish . But a small recommendation - his autobiography , called "My Experiments with Truth" , is usually available in bookstores . Buy it and read it . It may change your mind .

Haha. You won't upset me with the "truth", Pekka. The truth is that he did free a country. You can't argue with the effectiveness of his methods.

What makes you down on him, Pekka? Is it that he didn't kick his assassin's ass before he died?

As I said, I'm peaceful and not here to argue. I've told my view on Ghandi before here so .. no reason for me to go on about it again especially when this is a celebration thread of this person.

But in short, I have given some criticism (constructive) about his wussy ways and how he let his people down when it counted the most and it's also a fact that he was attracted to underaged children and acted upon those urges.

Last I heard, this was just sort of one of those things that was tossed around without much evidence to support it. "Fact", of course, doesn't have quite the same meaning as it used to, I guess...

Well, did you see Hitler yourself? No, so who knows if he even existed.. must be a myth.

Uh. Pekka. The burden of proof is on you to show that Gandhi was a pervert. There is no reason to assume he was. If you can provide evidence - good, solid, strong evidence - I'll believe you. But just saying it's a fact and that the truth will upset me isn't exactly the best way to get me to see the light.
