  • The 5th commandment

    Hello all.

What is the deal with the 5th commandment? The first 4 deal with man's relationship with God, the last 6 deal with man's relationship with man. We have:

    Don't murder (6)
    Don't commit adultery (7)
    Don't steal (8)
    Don't lie (9)
    Don't covet (10)

    These are all pretty general..

But number 5 is to honor your father and mother. And this has extra associated with it (that your days may be long upon the earth).

What is special about honoring your mother and father? It seems to be one of the general things that is common in all cultures, but I am looking at it from a Judeo-Christian prospective.

    I thought that was #4.

It's a good idea, follow the establishment, don't rebel. Don't be a Commie or anything nasty like that.

Whoever was sitting around making up commandments that he was going to claim were written by God had a son who didn't listen to him, so he stuck one in there about that.

They only put the rest of their life on hold to try and raise you.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

That goes outside of the Judeo-Christian prospective, and goes against the point that it is in all cultures (I think), including ones where it isn't tied to religion.

We can expand the discussion to include other prospectives, and I would be interested to know a culture where it wasn't part of the culture to respect your father and mother.

And to the jokers who say this one, while there are some elements as such, it is also in the culture to respect your parents.. so it isn't an example.

In Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice, the protagonist says you don't actually have to like your folks, just honor the sacrifices they made for you.

If you want to get a less literal interpretation you could perceive it as a recommendation to respect everyone who has made sacrifices on your behalf, or at least sacrifices from which you benefit today (WW2 vets, for example).

Edit: And I suppose it need not be sacrifices either. I honor the Greek philosophers for their work in advancing science and Reason, from which we all benefit today.

It's the reason christianity is still around. If you didn't honor your mother and father, you'd have not reason to continue on the same stupid religious traditions as them.

I see your point. What an archaic line of thought.

It's a commandment to take care of the elderly, since they can't take care of themselves and you too will be old one day, God willing.

Why not. Killing even one person is extreme.
