Searching property is a rather heavy nuissanse for the property owner. Not to mention it is a "private property" after all. Your house shouldn't be policed. Your streets should.

Btw, I had been a "victim" of a police intrusion in a private condo with no warrant and a perfectly poor reason to be there.

I was searched and my details were taken.

And then.... the police found nothing, and went away, telling us to be quiet.

(we were partying really loud in a friends recently purchased house, so the neighbours thought we were unlawful intruders at first).

It is also a potencial block to guard from political abuse by police. As in "making it a totalitarian state".

However making a random search of my bag on a street - where it is a public place, is not very intrusive, and in my idea would increase public safety.

90% of the effect is the deterrence it would have on real crooks.

The contents of my pockets or bag are also private.

Siro's viewpoint may understanably be somewhat different, unfortunately.

Yes, I was thinking that as I responded. The potential for a bomb-in-a-bag is much lower in our part of the world.

Actually I haven't thought about it much when responding in this thread. I actualy thought of the potencial to stop criminals.

I'm usually much more worried bumping into thieves or robbers, or punk youth, than I am worried bumping into a suicide bomber.

Admittedly it has had an effect on what is deemed acceptable in Israeli society. But as a person that has crossed over that line and has his stuff searched on a regular basis - it really has no bad effect.

What? Police asking permission insinuates a pinko state?
