Like it or not, this is where we are headed and this is where a lot of political power will shift to in our lifetimes. Next to that, this much touted growth of American conservatives is chump change.
I think I read somewhere that whites are no longer a majority in my state. We still have the largest percentage in population, but we aren't over 50% anymore.

Immigration reform will happen soon IMO, and it will reduce the Mexification of the U.S. by reducing the number of illegals, reducing the number of Mexicans who end up staying her because it's such a pain to cross back and forth, and increasing the numbers of high growth immigrants from other parts of the world.
immmigration reforme will never happen. I'm certain of this. It won't ever pass.

I don't know if there's a name for the phenomenon, but it's possible to be a proud member of an ethnic group while still loathing immigrants from that group. It happens when a minority group becomes sufficiently naturalized that their customs are all but identical to those of the majority, but still thinks of itself as a distinct subculture as a point of pride.

I'm thinking in particular of the black community in Prince George's County, MD, where I used to live. PGC is the wealthiest majority-black county (per capita) in the nation, but it's a pretty cruddy place to live by any objective standard. Crime is on the rise and the administration is riddled with incompetence and corruption from top to bottom.

Anyway, PGC's substantial black community was quite proud to be black (they celebrated Kwanzaa and observed Black History Month almost fanatically in school), but at the same time they were quite American and viewed Africans as foreigners. In fact, they hated the African immigrants in the county with a passion. The African kids were mocked in school wherever I went, and according to my mother they tended to be shunned by "native" blacks in the workplace once they grew up.

It was quite puzzling, since in my experience the immigrant kids had a command of English and an education equal to, if not better than, that of the other black kids. But they were still treated as rustic bumpkins. I think it might have had something to do with distancing themselves from the foreign group that was different from them but could lay a claim to their identity. Especially not since the immigrant kids didn't seem to care that they were black and were just working hard to become American. And not a single one of them observed Kwanzaa, naturally, since the holiday is more or less an invention.

If the Hispanic community is at all similar, they'll vote pro-immigrant as long as they still speak Spanish at home and are close to relatives across the border. Once they start thinking of themselves as just as American as anyone else, there's nothing to keep them from becoming just as rabid against foreigners as any white guy in cowboy boots. Possibly more so.

That's bizarre simply because I've never heard of anyone being hostile to African immigrants, period...

I don't know how "hostile" it really is. Perhaps it is normal territorialism.

Well, all the conservatives here have come out of the woodwork to gloat over it.

Immigration reform will happen soon IMO, and it will reduce the Mexification of the U.S. by reducing the number of illegals, reducing the number of Mexicans who end up staying her because it's such a pain to cross back and forth, and increasing the numbers of high growth immigrants from other parts of the world.
The government has proven it's simply not capable of reducing the number of illegals substantially. The only way to really solve the problem is to get at the root of why people immigrate, and that's because of Mexico's own internal problems.

Even were the influx of illegals to stop entirely, legal immigration will still be ongoing, and latinos still have a higher birthrate than whites (regardless of political affiliation). The demographic change will continue until it reaches some kind of equilibrium; that is, when there is no longer a powerful motivation to immigrate and when American latinos are educated and wealthy enough that their birth rate will fall to something close to that of other ethnic groups.

It had nothing to do with immigrants. He was the only candidate with any real name recognition. There was never really any doubt he would win. He was up against guys like Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante: bland, devoid of charisma, and easily forgettable.

He won by star power and by being the anti-Republican. The party bosses didn't like him because he was pro-choice,pro-gun control, pro-immigration, and wanted to spend more on education. He actually recieved more votes from Democrats then Republicans. Arnie would never have gotten through the party primary process and the only reason he got on the ballot was because the uniqueness of California's recall laws and the fact that Davis had gotten recalled.

The government has only proven that they have heretofore been unwilling to substantially reduce the number of illegal immigrants. The solution is simply a robust ID system with some enforcement muscle. Mexicans by and large would prefer to remain in Mexico. The vast majority of those who work here would stay home if they couldn't make so much more money in the U.S. It's a fairly simple policy to implement, and I believe a solid majority of Americans would back it.

I'm all for legal immigration btw, and have nothing at all against Latinos. They've been great for this country and will continue to be. But I just don't think it's healthy to have so many immigrants at once, and in particular from one country. Few Americans want America to be substantially more like Mexico than it already is.

The solution is only to reduce all our liberties so that a handful of nativists can wack off about how much more secure they are.

Guys, think of the people you've seen in your real life and how they vote. Now think how their parents vote. Either my own "friends whose voting patterns I know" -sample size is too small or biased, or someone is lying. Again, where's the source for this "80% of people vote like their parents do" -claim?

I don't really care about the demographic trends of American parties, but Apolyton OTF would sure be a lot more of a high-quality place to visit if we'd cut the lies off our posts.
