It's insane that if you make way more stuff than people want, you'll use up more resources than you receive in return? No wonder communist economies collapse...

American sugar is largely sugar cane. At least table sugar is. In the supermarket it's either pure cane sugar from Florida or Hawaii. Heck, I can drive about a half hour and I'd be in the middle of sugar cane fields.
        .
And candy companies are moving operations to Canada to avoid the sugar quotas. In this instance the developing countries ARE more productive, at least at the margin, and LordShiva is correct.

Maybe not, but no one would go broke. And I suspect we'd just start giving it to poor people around the world.

Their farmers don't sell to poor people, cuz poor people don't got no money.

One of the little benefits of capitalism is that producers only produce up to that point at which marginal revenue equals marginal cost. If you produced more, you're just stupid. Then you go broke.

Profits like the whole thing that capitalism is structured around.

What does that have to do with my post?

I equated efficiency with making profit.

Which is a good thing. It indicates, among other things, when to stop producing goods. When marginal revenue equals marginal cost, capitalists stop producing. Communists ramp up production.

I agree. I'd say that human nature likes to make profit.
