There was a fascinating bit in the Sports section of yesterday's WaPo about a washed-up college football player named Maurice Corbett. Seems he dropped out of college (which he was flunking) and was the surprise 2005 third-round draft pick for the Denver Broncos. He had talent, but he didn't work at all well with his potential teammates in training so he got the boot. With no money, no education, and no prospects, he dropped off everyone's radar until earlier this year, when he was arrested for armed robbery. Allegedly, he threatened a couple with a gun on new year's day and stole their cellphone.
He was out on bail when, er...well, it's unclear what he was doing, but he was in an SUV driving erratically, carrying the following items:
-a bulletproof vest (which he was wearing)
-a loaded semiautomatic pistol underneath him in the driver's seat
-a loaded AK-47 assault rifle and a second loaded SA pistol in the passenger seat
-a backpack in the back seat, containing a third loaded handgun in a shoulder holster
-a partially full bottle of vodka
-a CD of children's songs recorded by inmates from an Ohio prison
The police found him speeding near the home of one of the witnesses to his robbery trial. Refusing to pull over, he led them on a rather wild chase including two U-turns before he ran over a "stop stick" and shredded his tires. At that point, he was forced into a parking lot, but refused to leave his vehicle. Due to the bulletproof vest, police could not subdue him with a stun-gun, and had to resort to pepper spray. It still took several officers to get him into handcuffs, since he's six feet tall and weighs 245 lbs.
Any conjectures as to what the HELL he was doing? Possibly it involved ill will towards the witness, but the story did not mention that witness living in a fortress surrounded by a dozen armed federal marshals, which might necessitate being armed like Neo going to rescue Morpheus.
This should be an interesting case.
