  • Four guns, a kevlar vest, and a bottle of vodka?

There was a fascinating bit in the Sports section of yesterday's WaPo about a washed-up college football player named Maurice Corbett. Seems he dropped out of college (which he was flunking) and was the surprise 2005 third-round draft pick for the Denver Broncos. He had talent, but he didn't work at all well with his potential teammates in training so he got the boot. With no money, no education, and no prospects, he dropped off everyone's radar until earlier this year, when he was arrested for armed robbery. Allegedly, he threatened a couple with a gun on new year's day and stole their cellphone.

He was out on bail when, er...well, it's unclear what he was doing, but he was in an SUV driving erratically, carrying the following items:

-a bulletproof vest (which he was wearing)
-a loaded semiautomatic pistol underneath him in the driver's seat
-a loaded AK-47 assault rifle and a second loaded SA pistol in the passenger seat
-a backpack in the back seat, containing a third loaded handgun in a shoulder holster
-a partially full bottle of vodka
-a CD of children's songs recorded by inmates from an Ohio prison

The police found him speeding near the home of one of the witnesses to his robbery trial. Refusing to pull over, he led them on a rather wild chase including two U-turns before he ran over a "stop stick" and shredded his tires. At that point, he was forced into a parking lot, but refused to leave his vehicle. Due to the bulletproof vest, police could not subdue him with a stun-gun, and had to resort to pepper spray. It still took several officers to get him into handcuffs, since he's six feet tall and weighs 245 lbs.

Any conjectures as to what the HELL he was doing? Possibly it involved ill will towards the witness, but the story did not mention that witness living in a fortress surrounded by a dozen armed federal marshals, which might necessitate being armed like Neo going to rescue Morpheus.

This should be an interesting case.

So we have charges for erratic driving /speeding and probably failure to stop for a poilice officer and resisting arrest . It could also involve drunk drinving, assault and weapons charges although given the US feelings on guns its probably entirely possible to have 4 guns in a car and break no laws for all I know.

Well, some gentlemen prefers armani, others armor.

The guns was probably just to protect him against highway robbers and jaywalkers.

The real suspicious thing is actually the vodka - maybe he is a russian commie
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Perhaps he was so drunk he thought he was playing Grand Theft Auto.

It is Clarett, sorry. And AFAIK carrying around a loaded assault rifle while out on bail for armed robbery is at least frowned upon. I'm pretty sure you need a license to own an automatic weapon in this country, and even then you're not allowed to carry it around ready for use. At least, I don't think so...maybe I should consult wikipedia to be certain.

automatic weapons are not allowed at all. But it could have been an AK-47 knockoff that is only semi auto.

But even then, Bill Clinton passed a law restricting assault weapons. Even my glock is illegal because it has over a 10 round magazine.

Wasn't that one of those laws which was passed for a 10-year long "try-before-you-buy" phase? It wasn't re-enacted in Congress IIRC.

Due largely to the rash of freeway shootings in the Los Angeles area in the late 80s, and other highway shootings, a lot of states make it a serious misdemeanor or low-grade felony to carry a firearm in the passenger area of your car or truck, unless it's in a locked case.

Almost certainly, one of the conditions of felony bail is that you carry or possess no firearms, so his bail would most likely be revoked, or at the least, the cost of bail increased massively.

The possession of the AK knockoff could be sticky, depending on clip capacity - if it's something like an SKS 5 round special and the press is just ignorant, that might not be huge, but if he had a 30 round clip for his AKS semi-auto, that's another story.

Given that he's not an NFL star or other rich celebrity, the case won't go his way, and he'll probably do a good number of years, when you couple it with the armed robbery, if he's convicted on that charge.

It depends on the state as well as the Feds.

                              The base Federal requirements are:

You must be a U.S. citizen over 21 years of age.
You must live in a state that allows Class 3 weapons
You must be clear of any felonies as verified by an FBI background check.
You must submit a fingerprint card and two passport photos, which are kept on file by the BATF.
You must obtain a signature from your local Chief Law Enforcement Officer verifying that you have no felony indictments pending against you, and are mentally stable.
You must pay a one-time federal tax for each NFA weapon or suppressor. Full auto $200.00. Short Barreled Rife (SBR) $200.00. Suppressor $200.00. Any Other Weapon (AOW) $5.00.

In Ohio, assuming you meet the Federal conditions, you can own a fully automatic weapon. Carrying it around is a bit of a different story, though.
