Should the forward pass be disallowed?

I'm in complete disagreement. Keep the forward pass, and if anything the rule changes of late have made it too easy to pass. Get rid of challenges and tv timeouts. They burn more time than incomplete passes. If you're dying to shorten the game you could simply keep the clock running on an incomplete pass. He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!

Just switch it to CFL rules/field size. We probably have a better brand of football here, albeit with inferior players."The French caused the war [Persian Gulf war, 1991]" - Ned

When and how the officials stop the clock is not directly related to the introduction the forward pass. If speeding up the game is the goal, timing rules related to passes could be changed without returning to rugby. Charge a specific amount of time post pass, or restart the clock once the ball is placed, for example. The no-huddle offense sure seems to speed up the action. Not sure the networks or the fans want to speed up the game in all honesty. I know for certain the down linemen appreciate the blow, especially as the game progresses. No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

Yes, my complaint isn't the number of passes per se. It's the completion rate and the time rules revolving around an incomplete pass that seems like a problem to me. What I see is a lot of people get down a couple of touchdowns and their only way of getting back into the game is passing downfield all the time. Well, they only complete 40% of their passes of this type, and the clock stops at the other 60% that they don't complete, so you have a boring game. If the clock continued to run on an incomplete pass, for instance, the risk/reward for a pass would be different for those who have low incompletion rates.
Of course, you could argue that we are entering an era of higher completion rates due to specialized practices like skelly games. We could discuss this to see if it's so.Last edited by DanS; August 11, 2006, 11:21.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Keep the forward pass. Even with 50% < completion rates, it's an exciting game.
