Where is the benefit in marriage? Why do you need a piece of paper to say what you've already said in your heart to one another.

Inheritance (if not will), access to hospital rooms, input into the decision of whether to pull the plug ability to transfer property tax free are some that pop to mind.

For me personally, I consider the concept of marriage to be an outmoded institution and think that those kinds of spousal responsibilities should be a legal transaction, and can be dissolved at will. For both males and females. If they want 'til death us do part' then that is a religious affair, not a civil one...

That's legal business - why should there be the hugely restrictive divorce laws that we have. Romance is just the tip of the iceberg, and for those who need artificial binding to induce romance well, tough luck, there are many who do not want that...

If it were up to me, there'd be two types of unions:

Marriages could be performed only by religious institutions: churches, temples, synagogs, mosques, etc. The religious institution could set any limitations on who gets married in their churches. Anyone who does get married has all the legal rights of people in . . .

Civil unions would be performed by the government. As Provost Harrison suggests, these would be essentially contractual in nature, and would be available to both staights and gays.

Nope. While it would be ceremonial it would have the same legal effect of entering into a civil union.

That's what Bunnygrrl and I thought. We'd been together for 13 years beofre we tied the knot for purely economic reasons. It's actually brought us closer together. I'm guessing it has to do with a lifetime of social conditioning, and no matter how much you rationalize it, it's a core part of you.

Plus you know now if you split up, you have to divide your assets in two then give the damn lawyers a cut. What a scam, and I'll bet the lawyers are in league with the Hallmark card people too.
