When I see a thread about race and the name Caligastia as the threadstarter, I start to worry. But yeah, I really do object to positive discrimination like this - I think it does absolutely nothing to tackle racism yet may mean better candidates may not get the job (especially if a position is predominantly applied for by a particular ethnicity, or gender for that matter). And it's not popular either - I am sure you are all aware of what happened in Blaenau Gwent and how Labour lost one of its safest seats...

To be honest the racial tensions in the UK are twofold at the moment - the obvious tensions with the UK muslim community of course but also some very real social pressures being caused by unlimited immigration from the 2004 EU accession states.

EU freeloaders taking all our rented and social housing and bumming off the UK taxpayer.

I can see UKIP fighting the next election on the Slogan "Pole go home". Has anyone elses home town transformed into a little Gdansk the way mine has?

Funny that, the Poles I got to work with, while on the construction site, were anything but "freeloaders". They were doing a hard work that the nationals wouldn't touch with a 10 metre pole. Just like the Portuguese "freeloaders" before them.

Why have crutches for the darkies, who may or may not be subject to social pressures that obscure their opportunities. Why not instead have crutches for socially disadvantaged individuals who, for whatever reason, do not have the opportunities that others have?

Indeed. I have no love for race-based positive discrimination, because it is discrimination based on race, and it does contribute to perpetuate race-based stigma.

However, pragmatically, I think it helps more than it harms. I'm witnessing it in France, where the society has unsaidly started promoting some darkies in the wake of last year's riots. A few years ago, darkies had very little visibility in the mainstream society: Darkie actors played a darkie part (and not the part of an ordinary person, whose color doesn't matter). Advertisements rarely displayed darkies, and only if they were targetting a darkie audience or if said darkie was a sports champion. The only famous darkie musicians were rappers. You'd be hard pressed to find a darkie in mid or high management. Etc.

Nowadays, thanks to the untold "affirmative action" that many elements of the French society took upon themselves to enact (and probably with the unofficial goodwill of the state), you can see darkies in ordinary advertisement, and a black man is the lead anchor of France's biggest newsshow during the summer. Unbelievable!

I think this can seriously contribute to lower racist stigma in France, and that it can lead more people to accept that the darkies are people just like the whities, and that the place they deserve in society is just the same as the whities'. This evolution isn't complete yet (far from it), and I think it wouldn't have even started if many elements in the society hadn't wanted to make their own affirmative action.

I get a little ironic frisson from seeing people wailing about the immigration of white, Christian workers from a democracy within the EU, whilst failing to notice that every bar worker in London is Australian.

They have not been taking the social housing but the rented housing. There just isn't enough property to go around the population, especially in the South East. However this isn't the fault of the immigrant population, this has been the fault of the government not dealing with this problem, hence property is so ridiculously expensive.
