      Receptors are neurons. Idiot.

No, Kuci, they are not. Cones and rods may be connected to neurons, but they are not neurons themvselves, anymore than tastebuds are.

Cones and rods are part of the neuron, che. And taste buds are composed of multiple cells, so you're just pulling stuff out of your ass. And neurons get tired, not protein structures attached to cell membranes.. Tiredness refers to a neuron decreasing the rate at which it sends signals after a period of a sustained high rate.

Hey pretty good. And we also maybe got the beginning of a little semantic-based flame-war, what a thread!

              Whatever. Nice trick though, eh?

Hmmm, interesting. Although cone and rod cells aren't neurons you know. They form a synapse to a neuron and they are stimulated by light. They are (photo)receptor cells.

                  Check your facts.

                    From wiki:

A photoreceptor, or photoreceptor cell, is a specialized type of neuron found in the eye's retina that is capable of phototransduction.

Yes, it's a semantic issue. However, there's also this:

Photoreceptors have the same basic structure. Closest to the visual field (and farthest from the brain) is the axon terminal, which releases a neurotransmitter called glutamate to bipolar cells. Farther back is the Cell body, which contains the cell's organelles. Farther back still is the inner segment, a specialized part of the cell full of mitochondria. The chief function of the inner segment is to provide ATP (energy) for the sodium-potassium pump. Finally, closest to the brain (and farthest from the visual field) is the outer segment, the part of the photoreceptor that actually absorbs light. Outer segments are actually modified cilia that contain disks filled with opsin, the molecule that actually absorbs photons, as well as voltage-gated sodium channels.

i.e. photoreceptors release neurotransmitters. I'd say that qualifies them as a neuron. I'd also be surprised if developmentally the photoreceptor cells came from different cell lines than neurons.

Muscle cells form synapses with neurons. Does that make those neurons as well?
