Problem: explorer uses +-50% of CPU.

A few days ago the cause simply seemed to be malware and other junk, and explorer CPU usage in fact did drop to +-2% after I removed some nastiness. But now I'm back at square 1 even though I've repeatedly scanned the computer with Adaware, Spybot, and once a full scan with Norton as well. Annoying.

Opening C:Windows/System32 makes my explorer crash...

Can anyone recommend other scanners than Ad-aware or Spybot?

Got it. Turns out it was the same crap that was bugging my system the previous time, except that it was posing itself as msmsgs.exe, which is normally related to Windows, Messenger, this time (previous incarnations were a777949e.exe, ishost.exe, ismon.exe...). That's probably why my scanners didn't find it.
The problem is that there's something that's keep churning out these .pf files that probably cause the oversized CPU usage of explorer. With my limited knowledge of computing, I assume there's a regkey somewhere I need to delete but how to find it?

As a quick fix, if I start up the computer unplugged to the network, explorer's CPU usage is normal.

Using computer language metaphores in order to hide sexual impotence is a bad sign
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

The enemy I'm up against is quite likely adware.w32.fastclick. I'll keep you updated.

Scans with AVG and its little brother Ediwo yielded no results. There's definitely something messing up the computer when its starts up connected to the network. However much the little bastard can hide, it can't run.

And Norton's memory usage is insane.

Darn -- just like others have mentioned, this thread would have been more interesting if it was about the other type of performance problem.
