That's standard commas usage in India, actually. You can set Windows to comma things that way in Regional Settings.

          Yikes!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The college itself does not receive government money - it is Un-Aided . The university it is affiliated to is a government one - the University of Pune .

              Its fees are around 50,000 Rs. ( $ 1,111.11 ) per year .

You are correct . The state is prejudiced against the higher castes .

Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes - who have traditionally been discriminated against - have been given a flat 23 % quota in colleges . Thus , a college with 100 seats has to fill 23 of them with SCs or STs . If there are not enough applicants , or enough applicants who meet the criterion - then those seats stay vacant . Nobody else can fill them . The SCs and STs , however , are allowed to compete purely on the basis of merit , in the general catgory , if they so want .

Now a law has been passed , which I consider retarded , to give a quota to even normal castes , who were never discriminated against , because they , when they had the chance to leave the villages and join the cities , did not do so , and thus remained backward . These are mainly the land-owning castes . This brings up the reservations to 50 % - which means that people of high caste ( like I am ) or even normal caste have to face double the competetion , because we have less than half the seats available to us .

Not sure if it's the same in India as it is in Canada, but your first two years will probably be mostly mathematics.

I told you , I can't afford it . If I could , I would . I've seen the SAT papers you people take . They're pathetic by Indian standards . The individual subject tests , however , are good , but still slightly easier than the AIEEE examination we have to take . We have to finish 40 mathematics , 55 physics , and 55 chemistry questions , the total time for which is three hours .

Anyway - here is a link to the AIEEE paper which I took this year ( PDF ) : http://www.cf12plus.com/AIEEE'06%20Question%20Paper.pdf

Try it out . It has a marking scheme of 3+ , 1- . Some questions have more marks than others . You might like it .

If the USA was an affordable place for Indians , we would dominate all US universities - there's just so many more of us .

EDIT : WTF ? The link isn't working . I'll post it as it is .

What makes you think that Indians don't already dominate US universities?

First of all, congrats on the fastastic scores

At one time, I was concentrating on Computer and Information Services, but at that time, we were using punch cards, so I don't know how much useful experience I can pass down. Er... if you can't find the on/off switch to the card punching machine, look on its right leg.

I'm a lucky bastard in another regard . The college which I got admitted into is one which was , till this year , a girls' college . Thus , our batch is the first mixed batch . The end result - all our seniors are girls , so the ragging problem will be minimal , if not nonexistent . And there is , or course , the other benefit .

Because in the US, the Indians have to compete against the Chinese students.
