This sounds like Warlords' fault, I have no technical basis whatsoever for that assertion however.

What version of firefox are you using ? The 1.5.x doesn't exactly behaves sane.

It's not that, since FF is only consuming ~49 MB after I rebooted. And since I've never seen it go above about 200 MB, it also isn't the culprit.
I Don't think it's so much a question of swapping, just bad programming. FF 1.5 doesn't work sensibly. Recently looked for a car with lots of tabbing and FF suddetly took seconds to switch tabs - also disturbed other preograms.

It happens with Oblivion and lots of other resource-intensive games, too.

The same effect occurs in IE. So, not an FF problem.

Yes you can, but I wouldn't advise it. (But there is a different version for Mac)

I scroll down and it visibly redraws the page from the top down - it takes about a second or two for each notch on the scroll wheel. I have 2 GB of memory, so that should not be a problem. What causes this?
Why would you want to alt-tab out of a high-memory full screen prog and try and web surf or run other programs?

I don't know about Warlords, but with Civ 4, it takes literally two seconds to save your game and quit to desktop. This way, you aren't hogging tons of resources and trying to alt-tab back and forth.

Do you have ADD or something? Play your game or websurf. Why do you have to do both at the same time? Despite alt-tabbing being possible on most games, doing so decreases system performance considerabily and can increase system instability. You should avoid alt-tabbing if possible... only do it if you absolutely have to do something that can't wait.

But then again, I like to get the most out of my system when I game. If you prefer to do other things and don't mind the decreased performance, that's fine.

What kind of processor do you have?

And what kind of RAM is it?

                          1) Run Warlords in windowed mode. Then it should be fine.
                          2) What's your CPU like? Memory isn't the problem, likely; it's probably your CPU. That said, even I (on a quite dual core CPU) can't expect to play Oblivion while multitasking efficiently.
                          3) NEVER turn off your pagefile. There are benefits to using the page file. If your computer is set up right, you generally won't be slowed down by the pagefile, as it'll be swapping stuff to it that isn't currently used.
                          4) I'm not sure that some games (oblivion and civ4 included) don't override the scrollwheel while running in FS mode. Does it have problem when you scroll the old fashioned way?
