We also say "only a stone's throw away," but I've never heard about the cat's jump.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

My favorite distance is a hop, skip, and a jump.

I measure pretty much everything in terms of driving time, since that's the only metric that actually matters to me.

(The only thing within walking distance is the pool. Everywhere else I have to drive.)

just thought of another interesting point.

when driving, people always think about the time it takes, and never the amount of gas it takes... as someone who takes the train to get places, the cost is always right in front of you and a factor...
how much do you suppose gas would cost before people think, this place is X gallons / X dollars away?

Do too. My commute is $4-6 a day. $10 if I pick up my gf.

No, in the community rec center. We have bathrooms, not pools.

Have you ever drived a car? The amount of gas spent is hugely dependant on the specifics of the car model and (especially within urban environment) the way of driving. It's hopeless to compare distances based on amount of fuel saved since even with the exactly same car brand, model and total mass, a decent taxi driver can easily spent less than 4/5ths of the gas an amateur driver spends when driving the exactly same distance from city point A to city point B.

Yes, it's hard to compare between cars, however, most people drive the same car from day to day.

Nice to be in a place that's compact enough that a lot of things are within walking distance, everything else is either X number of subway stops away of X minutes by subway (great subway system here).

Measuring things by driving distance in a place with traffic as bad as in Seoul is insane...

Blocks, definitely, although in Chicago the block (not street, but actual block) is a quite valid system of measurement, as 8 blocks equals one mile nearly exactly - and consistently across the city, whether you're downtown or miles away.

Of course, people have a hard time using 'blocks' in the appropriate way They always say "three blocks thataway" when they mean three streets, whilst there are about 2-3 streets per block in the downtown area. Very confusing and lazy
